Following the conclusion of last week’s episode, NBC gifted us with a second all-new episode of “30 Rock” this week. Could every Thursday night be like this? This is definitely a winning idea!
In last night’s second episode (spoiler alert), titled “The Ballad of Kenneth Parcell,” we opened with the trailer for the new movie from the producer’s of “New Year’s Eve,” called “Martin Luther King Day,” starring Emma Stone, Andy Sandberg and Nick Cannon (in small cameos as themselves), along with every actor from every romantic comedy that ever existed. We also discover the film stars Jenna Mulroney (Jane Krakowski) who tells Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) when the trailers over, that she needs to air it during “TGS” because Jack (Alec Baldwin) said so. Liz is angry at Jack for this, but Jack says Jenna is good money for the show and that Liz has a power over Jenna because they’re best friends. Jack also shocks Liz by telling her he’s eliminating the NBC Page Program and is replacing them with computer helpers. This means, Kenneth (Jack McBrayer) is out of a job.
Meanwhile, Grizz (Grizz Chapman) and Dot Com (Kevin Brown) tell Tracy that his birthday invites have arrived, but Tracy is surprised to learn that “no gifts” has been printed on them. Tracy realizes he has everything in the world and goes soul-searching to find the one thing he doesn’t have yet. Elsewhere at “TGS” Liz suggests to Jenna they start doing their weekly lunches again, so the two go out to lunch. There, they’re greeted by paparazzi and Jenna convinces Liz to switch clothes with her because she doesn’t want to be bothered when she’s just trying to hang out with her friend. In Jenna’s clothes, Liz exits and is bombarded by paparazzi while she has paint thrown on her by PETA. As it turns out, Jenna knew the entire time and she poses for the paparazzi paint free while Liz watches. Liz is upset and tired of coddling Jenna when Jenna just keeps throwing her under the bus. The two decide to find new best friends and break up.
Jack tells Kenneth the page program is over. Jack offers him another job, but Kenneth refuses, telling Jack that he cannot replace the Pages with a computer. Jack shows Kenneth the new computer, called “Not Kenneth” that will give all future NBC tours. Jack returns to his office to find the head of the company, Hank (Ken Howard), waiting for him. He’s upset that Jack missed their one year “business-versary.” Jack insists he didn’t and that he had Hank’s present sent to the 16th floor. Turns out, the new computer messenger accidently sent it to the 6th floor instead and Jack finds the entire “TGS” staff enjoying the gifts. Without a Page to blame the mistake on, Jack takes the blame himself and is made fun of by the crew for making a normal-person mistake.
Liz goes out to a club to find a new best friend. There she finds a “Sex & the City” style group of women who give her the idea to go where she normally hangs out. So Liz ends up at the Barnes & Nobles’ bathroom, where she meets the woman inside, a woman just like her. However, Liz quickly gets annoyed by her new best friend, realizing she needs a shallow woman, like Jenna, to listen to her gripe about everything. Meanwhile, Jenna’s attempt at making new friends fails when she’s no longer the center of attention. Liz heads back to “TGS” where she and Jenna reunite as best friends. Jack and Kenneth also reunite, with Jack admitting he needs Kenneth around. Finally, Tracy also reunites with his lost loves…his birthday presents.
“30 Rock” airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT and 7 p.m. CT on NBC
