Latin music trio Son Tres from Denver played in Colorado Springs on Thursday January 19, 2012 at Cowboy’s Nightclub, playing merengue, bachata, salsa, and cha cha. The Black N Gold Party, hosted by Michele Fuentes, included; a salsa dance lesson by Victor Villa and Latisha Hardy, who teach regularly at Avanti Ballroom Studio; cha cha performance by Evelyn Ferries and Antonio Arias; salsa solo performance by Lucas Pratt; and give aways from national fashion giant EXPRESS and Jake & Telly’s Restaurant in Colorado Springs. Salsa/Latin Music night at Cowboy’s every Thursday has had a steady crowd since its opening in August, 2011, with increasing growth and interest.
Son Tres is not a full-piece band per se, but the group has a live conga player, a drummer, and a singer whose instruments play to the beat of pre-recorded songs. They are also trained in sound engineering. Since the room they played in on the 3rd floor at Cowboy’s did not have a fully developed sound system, Son Tres came with their own sound equipment like true professionals. Despite these technical shortcomings, the crowd, which totaled to about 140 people, danced non-stop from 8pm till about 1:30am! Ultimately, the crowd is the judge–if people are on the dance floor the musicians are doing a good job. Son Tres’s presence at the Black N Gold party is laying the foundation for something big in the Colorado Springs area. Many guests drove from Aurora, Denver, and Boulder to support and experience the latin music scene in Colorado Springs.
Hostess Michele Fuentes did an excellent job in organizing a successful latin music party in Colorado Springs, where the latin music scene is in the beginning stages of development. Michele wants to make it easier for people in that area to learn about latin music and dance, recalling her trips to Denver several times per week so she can learn how to dance. She wants to expand the scene in that area by reaching out to students at the University of Colorado in CO Springs and Colorado College, inviting latin dance instructors, and hosting monthly “theme” nights. It is important for Michele for everyone to feel welcomed at Cowboy’s on Thursday nights, saying, “I make a point to talk to any new faces I haven’t seen before to help them feel a little more at ease about coming and learning to dance. I recognize that they might be intimidated to talk to people or ask them to dance so that’s why I make a point to do it first! I also try to make sure that they make it out on the dancefloor at least once before leaving.” If you are in the Colorado Springs area, Cowboy’s Nightclub is the spot for latin music on Thursday nights!
