Going to the vet can be an adventure to say the least. Sometimes it can be difficult to figure out whether it is more stressful for the pet, or the owner. For those in Northern Virginia who just find it too much of an adventure, there is a great option.
Home Veterinary Care of Northern Virginia is a unique mobile veterinary clinic that offers all of the medical services of a standard clinic, but comes to your door in one of their two medical vans.
In 2004 Juan Villar, DVM was offered the opportunity to be the new owner of this ambulatory business. Although he was skeptical that this type of business would offer all of the services of traditional hospitals, he quickly found that the capabilities of the mobile units were more than adequate. He also enjoyed the ability to spend more time with clients and how comfortable both people and pets were. He knew that this style of practice was for him.
Ironically, the biggest challenge has been keeping up with public demand. Due to this happy surprise, a second veterinarian was hired and a new vehicle was purchased. The biggest reward for Dr Villar has continued to be the ability to work outside of an office and in a relaxed environment with people who love their pets. This has led to close relationships with many of his clients and their pets.
When asked if one species seems to be in need of his services more than the rest, Dr Villar states: “We have a high demand from our feline community. Cat owners have found that most of their pets don’t enjoy going to the vet. If, by contrast, the vet comes to them it is a whole different situation. They are commonly much more relaxed and among our clients we have a number of cats who have been banned from other practices. Often in a veterinary environment these cats become stressed or aggressive, but in the home environment they often are much better. We get to help a segment of the population who might otherwise go untreated.”
Services provided are diverse. They range from annual wellness exams and microchipping to full dental and surgical capabilities. Behavioral and nutrition consultations are also available All ages are welcome and when the time comes, personalized, caring humane euthanasia is provided.
What also makes this business special is Dr Villar’s desire to give back to the community. He does this by offering a 25% discount on all services for recently adopted animals. And this is for the first year!
It seems this unique business offers many great reasons to stay at home and let the vet come to you.
