While the Grammy Awards show isn’t set to air until later tonight, the sheer number of awards given out necessitate that many of the awards are handed out in ceremonies prior to the televised show. These awards are streamed online. Many of the early awards feature Americana artists and, so far, these artists have done very well for themselves, often upsetting groups from more mainstream genres.
In the Best Americana Album category, legendary The Band drummer Levon Helm took home the Grammy Award for his live album Ramble at the Ryman. Helm beat out some strong competition for the Best Americana Album award. These included Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Linda Chorney, and Ry Cooder.
Americana newcomers The Civil Wars pulled an upset in the Best Country Duo/Group Performance category. They took home the Grammy by beating out a host of more established mainstream Country performers including Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson, Kenny Chesney and Grace Potter, and Thompson Square.
The Civil Wars pulled in a second Grammy Award for Best Folk Album with Barton Hollow. The Civil Wars beat out competition from a who’s who of Rock and Americana music in Steve Earle, Fleet Foxes, Eddie Vedder, and Gillian Welch.
In the Best Bluegrass Album category, Americana legend Alison Krauss won a record twenty-seventh Grammy Award, the most by any female artist in Grammy history, for her album with Union Station Paper Airplanes. She beat out comeptition from Jim Lauderdale, Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, The Del McCoury Band, Ralph Stanley, and Chris Thile and Michael Daves.
Krauss then followed that up by padding her record with a twenty-eighth award for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, for Paper Airplane. She beat out Sarah Jarosz, Gillian Welch, Seth McFarlane, and Seth Glier for the award.
The Tedeschi Trucks Band, consisting of the husband and wife team of Blues artist Susan Tedeschi and Allman Brother guitarist Derek Trucks, won the Best Blues Album Grammy. The Best Blues Album category was an Allman Brothers family reunion, with Tedeschi Trucks beating out frontman Gregg Allman’s Low Country Blues and fellow Allman Brothers guitarist Warren Haynes’ Man in Motion, as well as offerings from Keb Mo and Marcia Ball.
There aren’t a lot of Americana artists left to root for in the categories scheduled to be televised tonight, with most focused on Rock, Rap, and Pop artists. But Americana fans will want to tune in for Americana breakout artists Mumford and Sons, who are nominated in several of the heavyweight categories including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Rock Performance.
The Grammy Awards will air tonight at 7:00 PM Central time on CBS.
