Los Angeles is home to beaches, canyons, and hills…as well as malls, nightclubs, and elegant eateries. It’s the perfect city to test your ability to look stylish and casual at the same time. LA’s general rule of thumb is don’t look like you’re trying too hard to look too good. Be true to wearing what’s comfortable for you, but upscale your own style with a touch of the trends. And it’s no different for this Spring season. LA is upgrading the essentials with a few economically-acceptable extras.
“There’s no need to drench your hair in single process color,” says hairstylist and colorist to the hipster crowd, Jessie Rae of Goodhead Salon in Echo Park, Los Angeles. She recommends a few crown highlights to help bring Spring sparkle to your hair, then actually spend time in the sunshine to help the highlights look more natural for longer. “And don’t forget a moisturizer that can lock in the glow and shine!” Jessie Rae prefers Redken’s All Soft Conditioner, ($15.)
Lips, without a doubt, get more pop than just the soft casual shimmer in LA right now. Most girls here swear by their Chapstick, but are switching it up for a little coral madness. The most sought after color is Korres Mango Butter Sheer Lipstick. For around $18, California girls don’t have to dream any longer for a natural lipgloss that also protects their sun-exposed lips. The coral color makes LA girls look modern and fresh, and the candelila in this formula smooths dry, sun-chapped lips.
The dark nails of winter are over in California. Soft pinks and nudes are the way to go on fingers and toes. LA girls who play volleyball at the beach and go dancing at night are relieved to know that if they chip a nail or two, their nails won’t be so noticeable if they don’t have time for a quick fix. Favorite colors like Essie’s French Affair and Kisses and Bises and OPI’s It’s A Girl and Pink-a-Doodle are taking over the city. (Dark nails, though still sexy in other cities, is the first mark of a tourist here!)
And if there’s one place an LA girl is still willing to add a little more drama, it’s for her nighttime eyes. In the day, whether at the beach or office, there will still be a variety of neutrals and browns. But as soon as it’s sundown, they eyes will get in disguise. The LA lady is not afraid to take a smoky eye to a new level. Instead of playing with blacks and grays, she’ll experiment with electric blue liners and flashy purple lashes. Layering Benefit’s BADgirl Plum mascara ($18) over Sephora’s My Favorite Jeans Color #40 ($12) is just one quick way the LA girl shows her sense of fearlessness and fun.
It doesn’t take a lot of time or money to look hot in Los Angeles, it just takes a little attention to the trends, and deciding what works for you. The LA’s girl’s true secret to beauty? Keep it simple, Sister.
