A man who claimed Japanese men raped and killed his wife remained in jail Tuesday on a domestic violence charge while officials investigate exactly how the woman died, police said.
“At this point detectives have found no evidence there was anyone else inside the home other than the husband and wife,” DeKalb County police spokeswoman Ms. Mekka Parish said.
Investigators said they found Mrs. April Armstrong’s nude body Sunday inside the couple’s home at 1864 Ridgeland Drive.
They did not provide any details on the condition of the 43-year-old woman’s body.
A short time later, they arrested Mr. Jesse Armstrong, 60, and charged him with domestic violence after finding evidence at the scene that he assaulted his wife some point earlier in the evening, Ms. Parish said.
Shortly after 1:30 a.m.., deputies responded to 1864 Ridgeland Drive in reference to a person down, police said.
“The caller said a man was in the middle of the road yelling, crying and stating (that someone) had sexually assaulted his wife and that she was dead,” according to a DeKalb County police report.
When the responding officer approached the home, he heard a man yelling for help.
“I entered the location and observed the victim, Mrs. April Armstrong laying face down on the living room floor in between the couch and the entrance to the kitchen,” the report said. “Mrs. Armstrong was not wearing any clothing. She was unresponsive and not breathing.”
Mr. Armstrong was sitting on the couch beside Mrs. Armstrong, crying and saying, “They killed her,” the report said.
Mr. Armstrong, who was only wearing a pair of tan pants and socks, had several cuts on his face and minor cuts on the fingers of both hands, police said.
“The living room was ransacked and it appeared that there was a struggle inside the living room,” the report said. “I observed blood on a couple of pieces of furniture.”
The officer removed Mr. Armstrong from the location after paramedics arrived.
“As I began to speak to Mr. Armstrong, I smelled the strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath,” the report said. “He appeared to be extremely intoxicated.”
He told the officer he and Mrs. Armstrong had been drinking vodka and beer, police said.
“Mr. Armstrong advised that while he and Mrs. Armstrong were at the location, four unknown Japanese suspects came to the location,” the report said. “He advised that Mrs. Armstrong opened the door. Immediately two of the suspects grabbed him and took him to one of the back rooms. The other two grabbed Mrs. Armstrong.”
Mr. Armstrong said the men threatened to kill him and assaulted him, striking him several times in the face.
He said the other two kept Mrs. Armstrong in the living room and assaulted her. Then they raped her before they all fled the home.
Then the officer asked Mr. Armstrong several times for descriptions of the suspects. But police said he could not provide any description of their clothes, vehicle, or even confirm if they were armed.
The caller, Ms. Angelina Salmeri, said she had come outside to talk to her friend when she observed the door to home swinging open.
She said she could hear Mr. Armstrong screaming and yelling for help. Ms. Salmeris said she heard loud noises inside the home, but did not see any vehicles leave, according to the police report.
Inside the home were several beer bottles, a glass pipe with a white residue believed to be cocaine lying in the same area where Mrs. Armstrong’s body was found, the report said. The officer also found a small plastic bag that had a small white chalky substance resembling cocaine on the living room floor, the report said.
Investigators on Tuesday were still waiting on the autopsy to find out the cause of Mrs. Armstrong’s death.
