It appears that the reason behind Manny Pacquiao’s decision to forego a 4th bout against Juan Manuel Marquez is because he doesn’t believe the fans want to see it. Pacquiao stated that his main concern in boxing is what his fans want. Pacquiao and Marquez fought last November to a highly controversial decision victory for Manny. Many pundits thought that the two would rematch in June. However, Manny chose Bradley instead. According to a Tuesday February 28th report by BoxingScene.com, Pacquiao made the following comments:
“For me, as a boxer, if I don’t care what the fans say, their satisfaction … it’s good to fight Marquez because you don’t get hurt, you know, it’s just many movements, not as much toe-to-toe, exchanging punches. But my concern is the fans. I don’t want to lose the trust of the people in boxing. I don’t want to lose the fans in boxing. That’s my first concern, especially at this time.”
All 3 fights between Marquez and Pacquiao have ended in controversy. Their first encounter in 2004 ended in a draw. Their second encounter in 2008 ended in a controversial split decision for Manny. Their 2011 battle appeared to be won by Marquez only to have the judges give it to Pacquiao. After the fight Bob Arum declared that there should be a 4th bout. Of course, Arum was thinking that it would make even more money for him.
However, Manny didn’t feel it was the best fight for his fans and decided that the undefeated Timothy Bradley was a better option. The two will fight on Saturday June 9th, live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Pacquiao is the favorite in this fight but many pundits feel that Bradley’s physical style could cause problems for the smaller Pacquiao. For more on the BoxingScene’s report, click here.
