Being that we live in the New Orleans area Mardi Gras is a very big deal. Not just in New Orleans itself but almost everywhere you go in Louisiana it is celebrated in one way or another.
That being said, if you are a “local” that means Mardi Gras season (yes we consider it a season) is second nature to not only adults but also their children. Thank goodness for us there are many options for families that choose to celebrate Carnival all the way through Fat Tuesday.
St. Tammany Parish has many transplants from out of state and from other areas of Louisiana. For those of you who have never experienced the hoopla that is Mardi Gras and have young children you may want to stick to the Northshore. There are plenty of parades, marching bands and throws and the pace is much slower than the Big Easy.
Parades start Saturday, February 4, 2012 with the Krewe of Bilge boat parade in Slidell and Sunday February 5th brings the Krewe of Perseus.
Then on Friday night February 10th, Mardi Gras on the Northshore is in full swing with the Krewe of Eve in Mandeville. Saturday night February 11th, brings us the Krewe of Olympia in Covington and rounding out the weekend on Sunday February 12th, is the Krewe of Dionysus in Slidell and the Krewe of Tchefuncte boat parade in Madisonville.
Friday night February 17th, is the start of Mardi Gras weekend where you can see the Krewe of Selene in Slidell and the Krewe of Orpheus Mandeville Mandeville.
Last but not least on February 21st, Fat Tuesday where you can see Lions followed by the Krewe of Covington and in Lacombe that afternoon the final parades of the season the Krewe of Skunks followed by the Krewe of Chahta-Ima.
So grab your kids, chairs, snacks and ladders and have a fun filled Northshore Mardi Gras experience!
