This week saw the release of several continuing storylines within the Marvel Universe, including some revelations, the beginning of the triumphant return of a missing hero, and some brewing’s in the Ultimate Universe. (Possible Spoilers)
Astonishing X-Men #46
This week’s story picks up with part 3 in the Exalted storyline. The story picks up with some background information on the Multiverse Earth that Cyclops now finds himself in, giving the reader, along with Cyclops, some much needed insight into this new world. After this rush of knowledge Cyclops looks to continue his fight against the “villain” known as Savior alongside several Multiverse versions of favorite characters. This is an action packed issue with some interesting information on this new Earth, which differs completely form the regular Marvel Earth. It is a must read for anyone who loves X-Men, it provides an interesting deviation from the current Regenesis storyline that is going on in the world of the X-Men. Not a good issue though to pick right up of the shelf seeing as how it’s in the middle of a storyline and could become very confusing very quickly for any new readers.
Mighty Thor #10
This is it the beginning of the return of Thor. After dying during the end events of Fear Itself Thor was sent to where the gods die aka a giant boat floating towards a god eating monster, within this boat the gods lose their memories of who they were as the float to their inevitable end. Meanwhile events continue to go forward as the All-Mothers continue striving with their dream of creating Asgardia, a realm on Earth where all beings are equal. Meanwhile a troll, Ulik, continues to masquerade as the warrior Tanarus, who replaced everyone’s memory of Thor, save Loki. This issue begins to see the Trolls plot to assassinate the All-Mothers with none save Heimdall seeing the troll for who he is and ending up getting beaten on the eve of a foreseen assassination. During this issue Thor’s hammer makes its return and sets off to find the God of Thunder who throughout the issue has slowly begun to remember who he is and is determined to reclaim what is his. I am truly pleased with where this series is going having never been a Thor fan and if possible suggest that it garners a read.
The Ultimates #6
This issue is part 2 of the World storyline. After the revelation that Reed Richards has returned and been behind the recent attacks seen since the series return, as Falcon infiltrates The World, Nick Fury sets off to find the one man he needs to take this menace down, Captain America. This issue is definitely a filler issue, with no action to be seen. Though it does offer some glimpses behind the madness of Reed Richards and what Fury is planning after the inevitable denial by Capt. to return to lead the Ultimates. This issue also points toward the involvement of the mutants at some point down the line. All and all this is an essential issue to read for anyone following the story, but be warned this issue is a little dry, and for new readers to this I suggest starting from the beginning since this is only on issue 6.
Throughout the week I will be including some more hybrid reviews/summaries as I catch up on this week’s reading. Also each week I’ll be doing a spotlight segment highlighting some of the must reads from the past for any new readers (House of M, Civil War, Batman Hush…etc.) so if you have any suggestions of what to spotlight let me know in the comments section.
