Feb. 24, 2012, Marvel issued a press release, giving the first look at John Carter: The Gods of Mars #1. The press release included the cover (see main article image) and three pages from inside the comic book (see slideshow). This comic book will be a short run of five issues. The release of the comic book will be two weeks after the release of the John Carter movie.
Both the comic and the movie are based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ character from the novel A Prince of Mars, first published in 1912. The John Carter character has had a long history of success and failure. The John Carter character has been in novels, comic strips, little big books, comic books and mentioned in several television programs. The one of the most recent publication of the John Carter character was published by Dynamite Entertainment titled Warlord of Mars. This version of John Carter is a mature rated comic book with a semi-large following. Marvel released a prequel comic book to the Disney adaptation of John Carter World of Mars in late 2011. This was a four issue release that seemed to fly under the radar with most comic book fans.
With the varying versions of the John Carter character, will current John Carter fans feel the character is worth reading or is this comic book to be just a foot note in John Carter’s history?
