Veterans and the various organizations who help to serve both active and past military are closely watching as precedents are set, bills passed and legislation is signed into law. Actions in Annapolis, even those directed at other counties, will impact what happens to the American Legion halls in Baltimore County. Members are asking the public to join in support of bills that will benefit the organizations, their members and the programs they operate in support of active military.
As the Maryland General Assembly marches toward Sine Die in April, thousands of bills have been introduced that will impact the military, and especially our veterans. In many situations the bills impact the non-profit organizations comprised of veterans such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the American Legion. These organization grew strong after World War II, but have had difficulty recruiting new members especially after VietNam. Now, without new – younger – members, these organizations are struggling to stay viable. They rely heavily on fundraising activities to make up for lack of membership dues. As members age, retire and become dependent on limited incomes like social security, the groups are strapped for cash. They are experiencing difficulties in meeting mortgage payments for their halls or paying their utility bills.
Many local halls have a bar, and legislation regulating liquor licenses and the sale of alcoholic beverages is before the General Assembly. Legislation is also geared toward many of the organizations’ fundraising activities such as card games and gaming machines. Here’s a list of some of the legislative bills currently being considered in the 340th Session of the Maryland General Assembly (2012). Your active support to assist these dedicated non-profits would be appreciated.
