A cream eye shadow sounds like a good idea – silky, smooth color that’s fast and easy to apply with your fingers. But finding a cream shadow that doesn’t crease or fade is usually an impossible task. In most cases, you have to turn to high-end cosmetic brands like M.A.C. for a high performing cream shadow – and you wind up paying a higher price for it. With its foray into the world of cream shadows, Maybelline offers up a budget-friendly alternative to M.A.C.’s Paint Pots ($17.50) – EyeStudio Color Tattoo 24HR Cream Gel Shadow ($6.99). But just because the Color Tattoo Cream Shadows are at a lower price point, are they worth the money?
The Maybelline Color Tattoo Shadows come in small glass jars that are very similar to the packaging for M.A.C.’s Paint Pots. The Maybelline jars hold 4 grams of product compared to the Paint Pots’ 5 grams, and feature black lids with stickers that list the shade.
Maybelline’s Color Tattoo 24HR Cream Gel Shadows come in 10 shades. For those interested in neutral shades, there are four options: Too Cool, a shimmery white; Audacious Asphalt, a shimmery charcoal; Bad to the Bronze, a shimmery golden brown; and Tough as Taupe, a matte gray-purple. If you prefer a warmer look, Pomegranate Punk, a shimmery burgundy, or Bold Gold, a dark, shimmery gold, fit the bill. However, the line also includes some fun, bright shades for those who prefer a more vibrant look – Fierce and Tangy, a bright, satiny orange; Edgy Emerald, a shimmery teal; Painted Purple, a shimmery violet; and Tenacious Teal, a shimmery turquoise.
Maybelline Color Tattoo 24HR Cream Gel Shadows should eventually be available anywhere that Maybelline products are sold. However, since they are a new product, they may not be in all stores yet. On Long Island, you can find them now in CVS, Walgreen’s, Target and Walmart locations. They are also available at Long Island Ulta locations in Levittown, Commack, Patchogue and Lake Grove.
The Maybelline Color Tattoo 24Hr Cream Gel Shadows are extremely creamy and have terrific color payoff. They are easy to apply and blend with your finger, so they work well when you’re in a hurry. While they may not last the 24 hours that Maybelline claims, the Color Tattoo shadows hold up for a good 8 to 10 hours without creasing. It’s still probably a good idea to wear a shadow primer like Urban Decay Primer Potion ($19) or Too Faced Shadow Insurance ($18) beneath them, especially if you have oily lids. If you’re still leery of wearing the Color Tattoo shadows for fear of creasing, they make excellent color bases beneath powder eye shadows, making your eye look more vibrant and longer-lasting. In fact, Maybelline Color Tattoo 24HR Cream Gel Shadows perform so well that you can buy them instead of the M.A.C Paint Pots and save a pretty penny while still rocking a fabulous eye look.
