Latest Headlines (Click on title to read): Pacquiao or Mayweather?: Skills can pay bills, but never underestimate ‘heart’ / Malignaggi talks about training at Wild Card; says Mayweather has become a hater
Undefeated 7-time boxing World Champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr. was in Puerto Rico Monday to promote his Cinco-de-Mayo fight against Miguel Cotto in Las Vegas. But instead of grabbing sports headlines for facing Cotto as he spoke in front of his opponents’ countrymen, Mayweather received media attention once again, more for spitting dirt on the name of nemesis Manny Pacquiao.
“Floyd Mayweather is not a cheater like Antonio Margarito and Manny Pacquiao,” Mayweather said on the dais at the Puerto Rico press conference.
Margarito’s mention is understandable. The disgraced Mexican was caught with loaded handwraps prior to fighting Shane Mosley, but Pacquiao? And then again Mayweather would mention to the media about the sad old song about performance enhancing drug tests, etc.

In other words, what else is new?
Actually there is something new. Albeit headline-grabbing, Mayweather’s recent tirades against Pacquiao fell on weary ears, and failed to garner the same type of impact his previous ones did. Yahoo! Boxing columnist Kevin Iole, who has been generally supportive of Mayweather, even wrote an article requesting for him to “shut up”.
“Memo to Floyd Mayweather Jr.: Shut up. Please. Button up now, before you open your mouth again and say something even more stupid than you’ve already said,” wrote Iole.
At least more people are realizing what seemed so obvious to this scribe long ago. Truth be told, Mayweather’s antics are getting cheaper by the minute. One can only cry wolf so many times, until people stopped caring. And for Mayweather, that time has come.
It’s either fight Pacquiao, or quit with the public relation stunts and hype. Mayweather’s media games are playing like Ataris these days: tired and played out. Time for an upgrade. Time to just shut up and fight.
