In the news lately there has been some discussion of a concept which has been phrased a “mommune”. The idea behind this concept is two single parents (moms) who co-abode (cohabitate) in order to share bills, share costs of housing , cut back on child care expenses and share household chores. CBS did a segment recently on two moms and their “mommune” in Los Angeles. Click here to see that segment.
Aside from the financial practicalities of a “mommune” there are emotional benefits as well. Companionship, help with raising each other’s children, a babysitter if you want to go out, or a carpool from school/day care are all added benefits. There are various reasons a single mom would look for a situation like this and there is even a non-profit organization called CoAbode that will help pair you up with other single moms looking for a roommate in your area.
There are even floor plans and home builders now who are focusing on multi-generational homes that would be well-suited for a situation like this; homes that are built to support two households under one roof. Meritage Homes in Gilbert is clearing a piece of land on Higley and Pecos to build some of these multi-generational homes.
What do you think? Would you (as a single parent) consider something like this?
