I bought my son a big bag of giant bugs, so it wasn’t long before I started thinking about using them as role-playing game props. The bugs are big — really big — so that makes them all the more formidable. The fun part was figuring out what each bug was. The next bug profiled is an innocent sounding critter that’s far more deadly than its name might indicate.
Wikipedia describes the scarlet lily beetle (Lilioceris lilii), or red / leaf lily beetle, as a leaf beetle that eats the leaves, stem, buds and flower of lilies, fritillaries and other members of the family Liliaceae. Bugs of this size can depopulate entire forests with their considerable appetites. In appearance, the bug’s elytra (harder forewings) are shiny and bright scarlet in color. The lily beetle’s underside, legs, eyes, antennae and head are all pitch black, greatly contrasting the bright red color of the wings. They have large eyes, a slim thorax (neck) and a wide abdomen.
Scarlet lily beetles that sense danger can play dead, becoming motionless, folding up its appendages and falling with its black under surface facing up, thereby helping it camouflage with the ground to get away. If unable to escape, they are also able to ‘squeak’, by rubbing two parts of their body together. This process, known as stridulation, is usually used to scare away larger predators – for giant scarlet lily beetles it can blast attackers for sonic damage.
