Cincinnati—Judge Ralph Winkler sentenced Shanna Mitchell, 33, to prison for 14 years after starving and nearly beating a 4-year-old child to death.
Mitchell became legal guardian of the child after authorities removed her from a friend with a drug addiction.
Instead of taking in the child and providing love and care, Mitchell tortured and attempted to kill the child. After Mitchell’s arrest, authorities removed her seven children.
When authorities removed the abused girl from Mitchell’s home, she was near death at 21 pounds.
Both Assistant Prosecutor Ryan Nelson and Judge Ralph Winkler agreed that it was the worst case of child abuse either had ever seen that didn’t result in death.
“She singled this child out and beat the living crap out of her,” Nelson told the judge.
The judge also noted that it got so bad for the child that she had to steal bottles from Mitchell’s other children, which led to more beatings. Judge Winkler said the child would have starved to death within several weeks if the crime had not been uncovered by an anonymous caller.
Mitchell had no explanation for her crime other than saying that things had just gotten out of control. And it’s anyone’s guess what Mitchell meant by those comments.
Assistant Prosecutor Nelson compared the ravaged 4-year-old’s body to Auschwitz prisoners.
The abused girl had a fractured tailbone, fingers, hands, legs, arms and ribs and cuts to her genitalia.
Before Mitchell left the courtroom, Kenneth Kimbrall, the victim’s father had some words for the former friend he trusted to care for his daughter.
“The time when I had issues in my life you promised to take care of my daughter, but the way you treated her, I wouldn’t treat a dog like that. I hope you get everything you deserve and I pray no one treats your children the way that you treated mine, and may God have mercy on your soul.”
