It’s January and your New Year’s Resolution list probably started like last year’s list. Did your list have one of the following on it: loose weight, promise to eat right, manage money better or save for that vacation that you’ve been wanting? If your answer is yes to any of those than let me introduce you to a new list. This list will not stop you from eating your favorite foods and it will definitely help you take that vacation you’ve been wanting.
So what kind of list is this? Take out a sheet of paper and get a pencil. On top of your paper write this sentence: I will start my own business in 2012. Yes, that’s right; you are going to start your own business. This is your new-New Year’s Resolution list. Remember when your elementary teacher asked you to take out a sheet of paper and told you to make a list of your goals? Well I have a question for you, whatever happened to that list? You are never too old to have goals or start new ones. Your goals are the starting point to owning your own business.
Let’s face it, how many times have you sat down at lunch and read an article that showed how a mother lost her job but turned around and started her own business? Or better yet, how many times have you seen a story on the news about a local mom who started her own business and is now making more money than what she made at her previous job?
There are a lot of success stories about mom’s who turned their lives around but the key is to “get started”.
Here are some tips on how to start your business list.
- Create a name for your business. Like most people who have dreamed about starting their own business, you’ve probably thought of names after names to call your business. When you create a name for your company, write the name of it on an index card and carry it with you. When your day to day life isn’t going as planned, take out your business index card and look at it. Let it be your motivation when you feel like stopping.
- Do your research. Do you want to own your own nail salon with no partners or start a hair salon with a family member? Whatever the case, you need to know the structure of your business before you start.
- Now that you have your business name and you’ve decided on how to structure your business, it is now time to apply for your EIN. Your Employee Identification Number is of most important and you will see why as you begin to take the next steps in starting your business.
Now let’s start making that list!
