Paul is the best thing that could happen to two sci-fi freaks traveling cross-country to a sci-fi convention and all the alien hot-spots, a real alien! With the super-powers they have always imagined, Graeme and Clive learn about Paul while helping him elude the authorities.
Simon Pegg (Graeme), Nick Frost (Clive), Seth Rogan (voice of Paul), Jeffrey Tambor (Shadowchild), Jane Lynch (Pat), David Koechner (Gus), Jason Bateman (Zoil), Sigourney Weaver (The Big Guy), Kristen Wiig (Ruth), Blythe Danner (Tara).
Paul doesn’t waste any time getting to the good stuff. With very little plot setup or character development, Paul is introduced quickly and from there the story is off and running. Graeme and Clive are stereotypical sci-fi nerds and introducing them to the alien of their dreams is funny to say the least. Paul being more down to Earth than they are makes things even funnier. The story is simple but moves along nicely with some good laughs and mild drama through the end.
Acting was decent with Pegg and Frost delivering well considering the genre and format. Rogan did the voice work for Paul nicely. Tambor was a good choice in his role, brief as it was. Bateman played a wonderful straight-man and added a nice element to things. Weaver was also fun and Danner played very well opposite Pegg and Frost.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were fairly well done and the film appears to have had a good budget. Effects were mostly CGI and obvious given the subject, but also nicely done with a solid feel. Dialogue was campy and silly and fun, while sound and soundtrack were good.
Overall Paul is a light, silly, enjoyable comedy. Those who enjoy simple humor or B-movies will likely enjoy this the most while anyone trying to take it seriously will probably be very disappointed.
With plenty of crotch humor and some foul language this should be fine for older teens and above.
Paul is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
