New Indies DVDs to watch on the old TV for the week ahead, a couple are even available to view at home before any theatrical release in Pittsburgh. So here’s the list for February 21, 2012.
“J. Edgar“- Legendary filmmaker Clint Eastwood delivers a disappointing Bio-pic about J. Edgar Hoover; and not only his cloudy ending but, his humble beginnings as a clean crime-fightin’ G- man whose sanctimonious figure was often featured in the social media of that day– newspapaers, pulp paperbacks & comic books. Leonardo DiCaprio inhabits his role physically (as well as figuratively) as the former FBI Director. Part of the 30 Day Rental window program, which means you can rent it at local Family Video stores or Dreaming Ant.
“Martha Marcy May Marlene“- Elizabeth Olsen, the younger sister of childhood stars the Olsen Twins, steals every scene as a former cult member who tries to reconnect with her estranged older sister. Though she cannot seem to shake her terrifying memories and the chilling paranoia that this cult and their iconic leader, played by a blisteringly defiant John (“Winter’s Bone”) Hawkes, somehow still holds sway over her. Another 30 Day Rental selection, which means it won’t be available to rent at either Netflix or Redbox until the middle of next month.
“Sector 7“- Fun, though highly derivative Korean creature feature involving a skeleton crew, led by a scrappy heroine played by pop star turned actress Ji-Won Ha, working on an offshore oil rig. While excavating for that elusive black gold, they unearth an amphibious predator that will make this ragtag team their prey. Available to order on an English subtitled Blu-Ray Region A edition with both 3D and 2D versions included.
“The Silence“- A 13-year old’s vanishing mirrors a tragic event that happened 23 years before, stirring up everyone that might have forgotten. An intense German Mystery that is beautifully composed with sunny cinematography to lighten some truly dark subject matter. Made by first-time Director Baran Bo Odar with an excellent cast rounded out by Burghart (“The White Ribbon”) Klausner and Ulrich (“The Thing”) Thomsen. Available to order now on Import DVD from England.
“The Space Between”- Melissa (“Red State”) Leo stars as a world-weary flight attendant, who bonds with a young unattended passenger during the chaos that is now known as 9/11. When she discovers the boy’s direct personal link to the terrorist attacks, she instinctively embarks on an unsanctioned cross-country road trip to help him discover his uncertain future. Available everywhere on DVD.
