Xeomin®vs Botox®vs Dysport®
Botox®,Dysport®and Xeomin®have a lot in common, but they also have some important differences.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved this new botulinum toxin type A product to treat severe frown lines or “11’s” between the eyebrows (Xeomin®was already FDA approved for use in adults with cervical dystonia and blepharospasm and has been used for treatment of those conditions by more than 84,000 people worldwide).
Like other drugs in this category, Xeomin®works by paralyzing wrinkles. It blocks the signals from the nerves to the muscles. As a result, the targeted muscle cannot contract.
Unlike its predecessors, Xeomin®does not need to be refrigerated. This may be an advantage when it comes to distribution. Another difference: Xeomin is “naked” meaning there are no additives — just botulinum toxin type A. This may lessen the likelihood of a patient developing antibodies to Xeomin®. When your body senses a foreign invader, it responds by creating antibodies and launching an attack. Should this occur with a neurotoxin, such as botulinum toxin type A, it may not have its desired effects.
Xeomin®is said to be more like BOTOX® than Dysport®. It takes about one week for the full effects of Xeomin®injections to be realized; once this occurs the results usually last from three to six months.
If you are interested in Xeomin injections, consult with a board-certified Medical Dermatologist or Facial Plastic Surgeon to explore your candidacy. Be sure to choose a qualified physician with extensive experience providing various types of injectables – one size does not fit all.
BOTOX®Cosmetic is a prescription medicine that is administered as a simple, nonsurgical treatment that is injected directly into the muscles between the brows. It works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces muscle activity that causes moderate to severe lines to form between the brows.
With real, noticeable results, no surgery and no recovery time, there are many reasons why BOTOX®Cosmetic has been chosen by millions of patients and their doctors.
- BOTOX®Cosmetic has an established record of experience that your doctor knows and trusts – it’s precise and predictable.
- Visible results have been shown to last up to 4 months; however, your own results may vary.
Non-Surgical with No Downtime
- It’s a simple, nonsurgical, 10-minute procedure with no downtime. Often called a “lunchtime procedure”, treatment requires no recovery.
After the Treatment
- No downtime is needed – you’re ready to get on with your day!
- Your physician will give you specific aftercare instructions.
- Side effects associated with the injection may include localized pain, infection, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness, bleeding and/or bruising.

Prescription Dysport® is an injection used to temporarily improve the look of your moderate to severe frown lines without changing the look of your whole face. The untreated facial muscles still work normally, allowing you to freely show facial expressions, such as smiling, in untreated areas.
Dysport®is a formulation that has been shown to deliver temporary improvement in moderate to severe frown lines, even with repeat treatments. So, the effect of repeat treatment with Dysport® may be comparable to your first use.
Do not have Dysport®treatment if you:are allergic to Dysport® or any of its ingredients (see the end of the Medication Guide for a list of ingredients), are allergic to cow’s milk protein, had an allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxin product or have a skin infection at the planned injection site.
The dose of Dysport®is not the same as the dose of any other botulinum toxin product. The dose of Dysport®cannot be compared to the dose of any other botulinum toxin product you may have used.
Dysport®may not be right for you if:you have surgical changes to your face, very weak muscles in the treatment area, your face looks very different from side to side, the injection site is inflamed, you have droopy eyelids or sagging eyelid folds, deep facial scars, thick oily skin, or if your wrinkles can’t be smoothed by spreading them apart.
If you are interested in Dysport®injections, consult with a board-certified Medical Dermatologist or Facial Plastic Surgeon to explore your candidacy. Be sure to choose a qualified physician with extensive experience providing various types of injectables – one size does not fit all.
