It is, afterall, FASHION WEEK
This is excerpted from a New York Times article in November of 1989. The article was written by their esteemed fashion critic Bernadine Morris.
When Gene Meyer opened his own fashion business in New York last week, he showed custom-made styles. He decorated an aerie on 57th Street in robin’s-egg blue and invited small groups of fashion followers and potential clients to seven fashion shows. Among the visitors was the designer Geoffrey Beene.
”Mr. Beene came to the first show and said he loved the colors and the cuts and that the clothes did not look like those by anybody else,”
Why did he choose made-to-order styles, a category of fashion that seemed moribund until Christian Lacroix injected a new spirit a few years ago?
”Because I like to work with individual women and to have total control over the product,” he said. ”I’ve always been fascinated with the Paris couture, and Mainbocher was one of my favorites – he did simple clothes before anybody else.”
