Two days into Fashion Week we have designers that stand out from others because of their fantastic talent.
Here are three designers whose collections were exquisite from yesterday’s shows:
Peter Som: His autumn/winter 2012 collection was inspired by screen divas Katharine Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich and the menswear looks they favored. Pebbled skirts, multicolored fur coats in vibrant burgundies and deep greens, cartoon green-eyed cat heads. This collection was for the woman who “At the end of the day, wants to feel strong and sexy.” There is no question he delivered on his goal! I call the collection Sublime! Tailored to perfection for the true lady like gal.
Jason Wu: I must say I was eager to see gowns, you know it is still award season…but if you really do your homework you will see that must red carpet pieces by Jason Wu are short, long loose dresses and judging by this collection towered ensembles of skirts and lace blouses. He also costume makes a lot of his red carpet pieces.
Many called the collection Indochina inspired and yes you can say that by the drums playing in the background, the intriguing lighting and the Forbidden City doors that opened the runway. Indeed his inspiration came from a trip to his native Taiwan; to put it to context it was more of a China’s Ming Dynasty, Forties Hollywood glamour and Chinese military uniforms. He’s so sweet and such a great designer/artist that he could put the Great Wall of China on the runway and that’s all and I would still bow.
Cushnie et Ochs: By Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs this is not a brand you will see on every rack or every closet and that’s why we love it so much. Inspired by Pedro Almodóvar’s gorgeously twisted film The Skin I Live In, the model like designers and very pretty girls showed eye-shaped cutouts above the breasts on body-molded dresses, silver zippers made for a groovy, tactile graphic across the bust and down the sides of an attenuated LBD. My favorite pieces were what it seemed as if they were deeped into sterling silver right before the show looks.
Of course there were more than tree designers who presented great collections, think my dear friend Yigal Azruel, Suno, St. John and so on. But leave it to this tree to make you feel in Fashion Heaven.
