Oakland police are investigating a double homicide that occurred Thursday afternoon and already have identified a person of interest in the case.
Oakland police spokeswoman Johnna Watson says officers responded to the 200 block of Athol Street at about 3:30 p.m. to conduct a welfare check. A concerned employer had called police to report that an employee had not reported to work.
Upon arrival at the residence, they spoke with someone and determined that nothing suspicious was going on, Watson explains. Six hours later, police received a second call about the whereabouts of the missing employee. Police say officers returned to the residence and located two bodies inside a car.
Watson says a person of interest has been detained, but did not clarify if this person is the same one who spoke with officers during the welfare check. So far, no arrests have been made.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact major crimes investigators at (510) 238-3326.
