The holiday hiatus for Once Upon a time is finally over and we get a new episode this Sunday, January 8, 2012 at 8:00pm EST. Let’s take a moment and recap the last episode, take a sneak peep at Sunday’s details and then look the characters that we have been introduced to at this point.
Once Upon a Time airs on Raleigh’s ABC affiliate WTVD Channel 11
On the last episode:
Sheriff Graham begins to remember his past life in the Enchanted Forest and Emma begins to consider that she may be falling for Graham while the backstory of the Evil Queen’s faithful Huntsman is revealed. At the conclusion of the episode, Emma and Graham see a wolf from Graham’s dreams – a wolf with one red eye and one black – and follow it to the Mills crypt in the cemetery, which has the symbol Graham saw in the book of fairytales during his visit with Henry. Regina confronts them and Graham ends his relationship with Regina, prompting Emma and Regina to get into a scuffle. As Graham later tends to the cut on Emma’s eye, Regina returns to the crypt and heads down a secret passage underneath her father’s coffin into the Evil Queen’s hidden vault. The vault contains the Huntsman’s heart which the Queen earlier ripped out of his chest after learning that he failed to kill Snow White. Regina takes the heart and squeezes it, causing Graham to die just after kissing Emma and regaining his memories.
What to expect on Sunday, January 8, 2012
Regina and Mr. Gold play dirty politics and take opposite sides when Emma runs for a coveted Storybrooke public office against Sidney. Meanwhile, back in the fairytale world that was, Rumplestiltskin tries to track down the ultimate power source in order to help his son avert the horrors of a meaningless war.
Snow White (Mary Margaret Blanchard)
Snow White(Ginnifer Goodwin) is the protagonist of the fairy tale Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and the biological mother of Emma Swan. She is a princess, and her father’s death is caused by her stepmother, the Evil Queen. The Evil Queen enlists the Huntsman to kill Snow for revealing a secret that prevents the Queen from ever enjoying true love. However, the Huntsman spares her, and she goes on to live as a thief in the forest until she meets Prince Charming. When Snow White is poisoned by the Queen, Prince Charming’s kiss brings her back to life. Snow and Prince Charming soon get married, but the Evil Queen arrives at their wedding and vows to place a curse on the entire kingdom in order destroy Snow’s happiness “if it is the last thing” she will do. Snow soon becomes pregnant and gives birth to Emma just as the curse begins to take hold.
In Storybrooke, Mary Margaret Blanchard is a single and kind-hearted elementary school teacher. She is Henry’s favorite teacher, and she gives him a book of fairy tales to instill him with hope. Mary also volunteers at the hospital, and when John Doe (Prince Charming) wakes up, they have an instant connection despite his amnesia and his marriage to Kathryn.
Emma Swan(Jennifer Morrison) is a 28 year-old bail bondswoman from Boston who grew up as an orphan in the foster care system, causing her to be distrustful of others. When she was 18 years old, Emma became pregnant and gave up her child for adoption. Her now 10 year-old biological son Henry finds her on her 28th birthday and convinces her to return to Storybrooke with him. Henry explains that she is actually the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming and that she was saved from the curse because it is her destiny to save the fairy tale characters trapped in Storybrooke. Though Emma remains skeptical of Henry’s theory, she decides to stay in Storybrooke after finding that something about the town and Henry’s adoptive mother, the Mayor, seems amiss. Her decision to stay causes strange and mysterious things to begin happening in Storybrooke. Emma finds herself constantly at odds with Regina, but she soon befriends Mary Margaret and is named deputy by Sheriff Graham.
The Evil Queen(Regina Mills)
The Evil Queen(Lana Parrilla) is the icy, darkly beautiful antagonist of the “Snow White” fairy tale. She cannot have true love, because Snow White did not keep a secret that the Queen had told her. For revenge, the Queen outlaws Snow White and poisons her to put her into a deep sleep. On the day of Snow’s wedding to Prince Charming, the Queen vows to cast a curse upon all of the inhabitants of Fairy Tale Land that will take them “somewhere horrible”, where the only happy ending will be hers and where she will be the only one who remembers who she is. To enact the curse, however, she had to sacrifice the heart of the thing she loves most: her father, Henry.
In Storybrooke, Regina Mills is the stern, authoritative mayor of the town and Henry’s adoptive mother. She has an antagonstic relationship with Emma and is determined to keep her away from her son. Regina appears to be aware of the curse and of her past life. She had a sexual relationship with Graham, but after beginning to regain his memories, Graham rejects her in favor of Emma. Out of jealousy, she kills Graham by squeezing his heart and reveals that she not only remembers who she is, but that she might also still possess her magical powers.
Prince Charming (David Nolan)
Prince Charming/James(Real name in Unknown) (Josh Dallas) saves Snow White by kissing her after she had been poisoned by the Evil Queen and goes on to marry her. Prior to meeting Snow White, Charming had been a poor shepherd, living with his mother on their farm, unaware that his parents had given his twin brother to King George in a deal with Rumpelstiltskin. After his brother Prince James is killed in battle, he takes his brother’s place in exchange for the prosperity of his mother’s farm. He takes his brother’s name and, unexpectedly, slays a dragon that had been plaguing King Midas’ people. As a reward, Midas gives Charming his daughter Abigail’s hand in marriage, which Charming reluctantly accepts after his mother’s life is threatened by King George. Shortly afterward, he has his first encounter with Snow White and falls in love with her. After Emma is born, he places her in the magical wardrobe to protect her from the curse, but he is fatally wounded in the process by the Evil Queen’s knights.
In Storybrooke, he is first known as John Doe as he had been in a coma for many years. He finally awakens after Mary Margaret reads to him about how Snow White and Prince Charming met. It is revealed that his name is David Nolan when his wife Kathryn arrives shortly after he wakes up. However, David has no memory of his life in Fairy Tale Land or Storybrooke. Despite this, he feels an instant connection with Mary Margaret and soon decides to leave his wife for her. His memories of his marriage with Kathryn begin to come back, however, and he decides to return to Kathryn to try to work things out with her.
Henry(Jared S. Gilmore) is Emma’s son whom she had given up for adoption ten years earlier. Henry learns the truth behind Storybrooke from a book of fairy tales, given to him by his teacher Mary Margaret, and finds his biological mother with the hope of convincing her to save the Enchanted Forest. He was adopted by Regina Mills, the mayor of Storybrooke, and it appears that Rumpelstiltskin was involved in his adoption. Henry was named after the Evil Queen’s father, whom she had to kill in order to enact the curse. Due to his rebelliousness and his unwavering belief that the people of Storybrooke are actually fairy tale characters, Henry has regular psychotherapy sessions with Dr. Archie Hopper. So far, Henry is the only long-term resident of Storybrooke who has been able to successfully leave unharmed when he goes to search for Emma. This is likely due to the fact that he was born in the “real world” and is therefore not directly affected by the curse.
Jiminy Cricket(Archie Hopper)
Jiminy Cricket(Raphael Sbarge, Adam Young as a child in “That Still Small Voice”) is the talking cricket from Pinocchioemployed as Pinocchio’s conscience. He began his life as the human son of con artists. Disapproving of his parents’ treachery, he desired to live an honest life. After inadvertently causing the death of a young couple, he wishes to be turned into a cricket by the Blue Fairy. In his cricket form, he is charged to look after and guide the dead couple’s son, Geppetto, as long as he lives. His Storybrooke counterpart is Archie Hopper, the town’s psychotherapist. He has a Dalmatiannamed Pongo and is frequently seen carrying an umbrella like that used by Jiminy Cricket. Archie is also a good friend of Marco, whom Henry suspects to be Geppetto. The Huntsman (Sheriff Graham)
The Huntsman(Jamie Dornan) is initially hired by the Evil Queen to assassinate her stepdaughter, Snow White. He was raised by wolves after his parents abandoned him. Though he normally killed humans easily, as he believed they were selfish and without honor, the Huntsman refuses to kill Snow White after she inadvertently shows her purity of heart and orders her to run away. To attempt to trick the Queen, he gives her a stag’s heart in place of Snow White’s heart. Realizing that she has been tricked, the Queen tears out his heart. She keeps him as her slave and threatens to end his life if he ever tries to leave or defy her.
His Storybrooke counterpart is Sheriff Graham, who is the town’s handsome and authoritative sheriff with a mysterious past. He initially follows Regina’s orders to arrest Emma twice, but he then offers her a job as a deputy. He has very accurate aim with darts, and he is very familiar with the forest surrounding Storybrooke. He had a secret affair with the Mayor, but has a growing connection with Emma. After Emma discovers the affair, he kisses her to prove that he has no feelings for Regina, causing him to have flashbacks of his life as the Huntsman. He breaks up with Regina and soon regains full memory of his past life, becoming the first character to be freed from the curse. However, shortly afterward, he is killed by Regina when she crushes his heart. Although his life as the sheriff is gone, his previous life as the Huntsman could return at some point later in the series.
Rumpelstiltskin(Robert Carlyle) is the main antagonist from the eponymous fairy talewho created the curse that brought all the people from the Enchanted Forest to Storybrooke, Maine. He is regarded as the most dangerous creature in the fairy tale realm, even in captivity. He loves to make deals with others, even after being imprisoned by Cinderella, and always warns those he deals with that “magic always comes with a price”. So far, Rumpelstiltskin and his deals appear to be integrated into the backgrounds of all of the characters of Fairy Tale Land, including the Evil Queen who promised to do whatever he says in Storybrooke when he says “please”.
His Storybrooke counterpart is Mr. Gold, Storybrooke’s wealthiest resident and pawnshop owner. He helped build and owns the town. He also brought Henry to Regina when Henry was a baby. Granny(Beverley Elliott) is the grandmother of Red Riding Hood. In Storybrooke, she is the owner of Granny’s Inn, and she is also Ruby’s grandmother. Her health problems prevent Ruby from leaving town. However, their relationship is more hostile in the “real world” than in Fairy Tale Land. Granny fears Regina, just as everyone else does, and even if things aren’t fairly explained, she will do as she’s told.
Doc(David Paul Grove) is the leader of the seven dwarfs who sheltered Snow White from the Evil Queen. He is also the personal physician to Snow White and is present when Emma is born. He becomes an unnamed doctor at the hospital in Storybrooke.
Abigail (Kathryn Nolan)
Abigail(Anastasia Griffith) is the haughty and spoiled daughter of King Midas. She was Prince James’ fiancée before he met Snow White. Her Storybrooke counterpart is Kathryn Nolan, who claims to be John Doe’s wife, though they have been separated for years since she believed that her husband David had left her. Kathryn begins to form a friendship with Regina when Regina brings Kathryn and David together.
Dr. Whale(David Anders) is a doctor in Storybrooke Hospital. He has very strong ties to Regina Mills. He is romantically interested in Mary Margaret. His fairy tale persona is unknown.
The Blue Fairy
The Blue Fairy(Keegan Connor Tracy) is a character from Pinocchio. She first appears in “Pilot”. She creates the Red Quill, which helps Cinderella and Prince Thomas imprison Rumpelstiltskin. She also transformed Jiminy Cricket into a real cricket, guiding him to help Geppetto after his parents were turned into puppets. She presented the idea of putting Snow White in a wardrobe fashioned from a magical tree that could ward off any curse. However, when it comes to magic, she cannot undo the work of Rumpelstiltskin.
Geppetto(Tony Amendola, Michael Strusievici as a young boy in “That Still Small Voice”) is the father figure and woodcarver from Pinocchio. As a boy, his parents were accidentally transformed into wooden puppets, and he was looked after by Jiminy Cricket. After he was granted a child of his own, made from the little puppet Pinocchio, Jiminy became Pinocchio’s conscience. Geppetto carved the magical wardrobe that was used to save Emma from the curse. His Storybrooke counterpart is Marco, the town’s handyman. Unlike Geppetto, Marco is married, but he and his wife have been unable to bear children. However, he is still friends with Archie (Jiminy).
