The Blackhawks came out flying on Thursday night with 4 goals on their first seven shots of the game. Jonathan Toews scored on a penalty shot in the first minute of the game after Dan Girardi covered the puck in the crease. The Blackhawks would score another goal a minute later when Marian Hossa carried the puck all the way through the offensive zone. Patrick Kane would connect on a home run pass with Marian Hossa which led to another breakaway score halfway through the period. The Hawks led 4-0 after the first period.
The Hawks penalty killing was outstanding all night long. They killed off a 4 minute double minor. Quenneville chose a 5 on 4, 4 minute minor rather than a 2 minute 5 on 3 penalty kill. Marc Staal would score for the Rangers early in the second when Hawks forwards left too much space from the point. Corey Crawford was huge when needed as he made a toe save on the goal line to prevent the Rangers from cutting the lead to two. Carl Hagelin would score late in the third period for the final tally. Corey Crawford made 22 saves on 24 shots and recorded his first win in a month. The Hawks were 7 for 7 on the penalty kill.
What it means
The Hawks win their first game in a month, their first road game of 2012 and first in two months. The stars showed up tonight and helped propel the team to a victory. This was not just a star effort as the whole team bought in and won a game. The Hawks were able to kill off 7 penalties tonight. The Hawks move into sixth place all alone for now. It seems like Crawford would most likely be in the net on Saturday. An all around team effort and it was obvious the players were relieved to finally get one in the win column. The Hawks built off of their good performance in Nashville and improved upon it which was good enough for a win.
3 stars of the game
3. Corey Crawford- Crawford wasn’t spectacular but he didn’t need to. The Hawks just needed a goalie to deliver a solid outing. Crawford was solid and didn’t allow any bad goals. Crawford did a good job to hold onto the puck under his skate and make a couple big saves. It all starts with one big save.
2. Marian Hossa- Hossa was all over the ice tonight. The puck seemed to be glued to his stick for the first couple of shifts. Nick Leddy’s goal was set up by an impressive offensive zone cycle by Hossa. Hossa also scored the last goal of the night.
1. Jonathan Toews- Toews was the captain tonight. He set the tone for tonight by converting on his penalty shot a minute into the game. If he doesn’t make that, the Hawks could be questioning themselves on what more could go against them. But Toews converted on the penalty shot and then converted on a home run pass to Patrick Sharp. 1 goal and 1 assist for the captain.
