The Liberty University Trail Series begins today with the Arctic 5K Trail Race at 9am at Liberty’s Snowflex Centre.
There are two other trail races in the series to add to your calendar: Liberty Mountain 5K Trail Race on February 25 and Bald Mountain 10K Trail Race on April 28.
The registration website, https://www.raceit.com/register/?event=8241, shows that registration is closed for today’s event; however, registration is open for the February race.
Coach Tony Tucker of Heritage High School has been raising money to build a new weight room at Heritage. Tucker announced earlier that if he raised $1,000 by Friday, January 27, he would shave the beard he’s been growing since January 2010.
At last night’s Heritage Idol talent show, Tucker announced that over $7,000 has been raised toward the weight room. And yes, Coach Tucker shaved that beard onstage to the cheers of the mostly student crowd.
Madison Heights Youth baseball registration will be held tomorrow, January 29, from 2-5pm at the baseball complex located at the end of Woody’s Lake Road. Visit the league’s website, www.MHYBA.com for more information or call (434) 845-5367.
The Natural Bridge Appalachian Trail Club normally holds weekend hikes on Saturday and Sunday. This weekend, they are doing something a little different. Members of the club are at Canaan Valley, WV for a weekend of cross country skiing and snowshoeing.
Liberty’s Snowflex Centre is the place to be this winter. With the unseasonably warm temperatures we’ve had in Lynchburg and across the country, snow resorts have been struggling.
But Snowflex, http://www.liberty.edu/snowflex/index.cfm, was created with a synthetic material that simulates real snow and is available for skiing, snowboarding, and snowtubing all year around. Public hours vary depending on school events.
Don’t forget to register for the Resolution Run, that will be held next Saturday, February 4 at 3pm. You can register online at http://www.raceit.com/search/event.aspx?event=56300c97-d9fc-428d-a7ae-8c8f39f53c1f.aspx. The event benefits the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Lynchburg and will be held at the club’s location at 1101 Madison Street.
Another upcoming event of interest is the Hill City Polar Plunge, to take place on February 25 at 10m. The event will be held at Camp Hydaway Lake at Liberty University. You must raise $50 to plunge and the event benefits Special Olympics Virginia. You can register at http://www.firstgiving.com/polarplungeva/2012hillcitypolarplungefestival or look for pink registration forms at local businesses.
It will be a great day for outdoor lovers again today in Lynchburg. Today’s temperatures will be in the mid-upper 50s and sunny. There will probably be people out playing disc golf at Peaks View Park.
There will certainly be plenty of runners and bikers out on the Blackwater Creek Bikeway gearing up for the Angels Race Triathalon, which will be held on April 22. Why not get out and join them today. There’s no time like the present.
