Owners, Supatra Yooto and Kay Soodjai, were elated to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their Montrose area business, Khun Kay Thai Cafe, formerly known as Golden Room restaurant.
What was initially advertised as Chinese food became known for its authentic Thai cuisine from the native Thailand owners. The restaurant, formerly located in a 1900s era home, was closed briefly in 2008 to open to an entire new building. The establishment emerged also with a new name.
Known affectionately as “the Golden Girls” for their initial name, the two have worked endlessly to create seasonal, fun Thai dishes. Diners can find Soodjai’s unique creations on the large chalk board near the counter. The names are catchy with Jeans-too-Thait for dieters and a Valentine’s Day special, Roll in the Hay, which is rolled chicken breast inside rolled noodles.
The business started in 1982 as these two college friends joined forces to open the Golden Room. Though they started with mostly Chinese dishes, it wasn’t long until a full Thai menu emerged due to popularity of their Thai dishes. Today the menu offers appetizers, side dishes, Thai desserts and beverages including wines and imported and domestic beer.
