Challenging economic times can result in difficulty finding the funds to buy pet food. As a result, many pet food pantries have sprung up throughout the state.
The following is a list provided by the Humane Society of the United States lists some of the food pantries in Maine. If there are additions to this list, please leave a comment, so they can be added to this valuable resource.
Houlton – Houlton Humane Society is operating a Pet Food Pantry at 263 Callaghan Road. For more info, call 207-532-3862.
Houlton – Hollywood Pet Salon, 70 Main Street, Houlton, has contacts with local pantries. For more info, call 207-532-7387.
Caribou – Halfway Home Pet Rescue Free Pet Food Pantry, Caribou Vet Clinic of the Presque Island Animal Hospital Building, Herschel Street, Caribou. Most Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 am to 6 pm. For more info, call 207-498-3878.
Auburn: The Good Shepherd Food Bank, a large scale food pantry, located in Auburn and Brewer, distributing throughout the state. For more info, go to http://gsfb.org/ or call 207-782-3554. The Greater Androscoggin County Humane Society (GAHS) helps supply them with pet supplies. Good Shepherd then distributes these supplies throughout their coverage area.
Portland and Westbrook – Furry Friends Pet Pantry available through the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland, 440 Stroudwater Street, Westbrook, (Wednesdays, 1-3 pm), 207-854-9771, and Camp Bow Wow, 49 Blueberry Road, in Portland. (Mondays, 1-3 pm) 207-541-9247.
Lakes Region – Animal Rescue Unit Pet Food Assistance, operating in the Lakes Region of Cumberland and Oxford counties. To donate or apply for assistance, contact Brogan Horton, email@example.com.
Standish – Standish Pet Pantry for those in need of temporary assistance in feeding their pets. As of April 3, 2011, their hours are Sunday, from 1-3 pm. For more info, contact 207-642-3461.
Camden – Penobscot Pet Pantry distributes free pet food to eligible families on the first Tuesday of each month, from 2 – 4 pm, at the American Legion Hall, 91 Pearl St., Camden. For more info, contact firstname.lastname@example.org, http://www.petobscotpetpantry.com/ or 207-763-4291.
Sullivan and Sorento – Sullivan Animal Food Eatery for the towns of Sullivan and Sorento. Contact the town office at 1888 Route 1, Sullivan, 207-422-6282.
Bar Harbor – MDI Pet Food Pantries. People can pick up food at the Bar Harbor Food Pantries. For dates an hours go to barharborfoodpantry.org/index.php or call 207-288-3375.
Deer Isle – Island Food Pantry, Island Community Center, Lower Level, 346-6181. Donations can be left at R.L. Greenlaw’s office on Thurlow’s Hill or at the pantry. The Island Food Pantry is open the first, second, third and fourth Thursdays, from 5:30 – 8:30 pm. It located on the lower level of the Island Community Center.
Edgecomb – Lincoln County Animal Shelter. Contact Betsy Pratt, www.lcas.me or 207-882-9677. LCAS hours are Monday through Saturday, 11 am to 4 pm.

Senior Spectrum Generations in Hallowell and the Muskie Center, Waterville are running an AniMeal program in conjunction with the Meals on Wheels program for seniors. Sanford – Corner Cupboard, Sanford Unitarian Church, corner of Main and Lebanon streets, third Saturday, 10 am – 2 pm. The Sanford/Springvale Animal Welfare Team has partnered with the Corner Cupboard to ensure a plentiful supply of pet supplies.
