As if Pit bulls do not get enough negative press as they are continually sought out and profiled in splashy media headlines, now one publication has decided to try and sway the public against them as Ontario considers doing away with the current breed ban.
On Sunday, one headline in TheStar.com, reads ” Pit bulls are dangerous and Ontario is right to ban them”.
The anonymous author of the editorial calls the Pit bull fanciers “misguided” in their efforts to support a repeal of the current Ontario Pit bull breed ban.
In a round-about manner, the writer equates Pit bulls to machine guns – citing that these dangerous weapons should be kept out of the hands of the bad guys.
From the editorial,
Bad people are the only ones likely to use a machine gun to commit robbery. But — in the interest of public safety — we ban machine guns from all, including the good.
And even though the writer acknowledges that bad dogs are usually the result of bad owners, a flippant “so what?” is provided.
Somehow this mystery writer is failing to see the big picture – singling out one particular breed of dog for special rules and restrictions is wrong.
Dog attacks can almost always be traced back to bad ownership.
If communities (cities, states, provinces) want to implement rules, they need to start at the root of the problem – humans.
Education about proper ownership.
The importance of altering pets – more emphasis on socialization and training.
Dog ownership basics needs to be what comes under fire – not the dogs, and most certainly, not one particular breed of dog.
Sadly, Pit bulls are not only subjected to the most rules and regulations, but they are also the target of most abusers.
Time and again, stories are published about Pit bulls starved to death – beaten – stabbed – shot and otherwise tortured.
Truth be known, there are far more stories about Pit bulls who have suffered at the hands of humans than the other way around.
