Bill Todaro’s skating career began at the age of 50 in an ice skating rink that had been closed by the County Health Department. As an entomologist Todaro was called upon to eradicate the ice rink’s cockroach infestation. It was a severe infestation and the manager hoped to be able to avoid closing the rink. The situation took Bill Todaro about three months of using modern pest control technology to completely remove the cockroaches from the building. The manager of the ice rink was so pleased with being able to be open for business he offered Todaro ice skating lessons for life.
He enjoyed skating so much he wanted to be in some type of ice skating competition. Todaro started by being a part of a synchronized skating team with other adults. He enjoyed being able to express himself on the ice and soon began looking for a skating partner. He wanted someone who was willing to train with him and participate in national pair’s competitions. Jan Galloway was also on the synchronized skating team and loved skating.
The two began training for the U.S Adult National Figure Skating Championships. Todaro and Galloway started using coaches to perfect their skating abilities. They hired a choreographer to help them develop the necessary routines and a seamstress to make costumes for their performances. It was a lot of work for both of them. They had a constant challenge to juggle their training schedules around work and family obligations.
When getting ready for a competition they will skate on Monday mornings from at 6 to 8 in the morning. They’ll skate at noontime, at lunch and then they’ll skate Saturday nights. Todaro and Galloway usually average about 3 to 4 hours a week or more of skating together for months. They may struggle a long time just to get their act correct. The two of them work hard physically at looking like they’re together. It takes them about a year to learn the dance and a long time to get the entire program together.
Their hard work has paid off. Bill Todaro and his partner Jan Galloway have won various gold medals in events held by the U.S Adult Nationals Figure Skating Competitions. In 2008 they won the gold medal for pre-bronze dance at Lake Placid, NY. In 2009 they won gold medals for bronze dance and bronze pairs at Grand Rapids, MI. In 2010 at Minneapolis, MN they won a gold medal for pre silver dance.
Jan Galloway feels all their hard work and dedication paid off. Todaro still enjoys skating and intends to do it for as long as possible.
