There are many different ways you can get your kids to know New York better. You could show them pictures of different parts of the city, you could show them movies filmed in various neighborhoods, you could take them on a bus tour, or you can bring them to the Queens Museum of Art and give them a bird’s eye view of the city with without even flying!
Inside the Queens Museum of Art you will find a very interesting 9,335 square foot architectural model of New York City that includes every single building constructed before 1992 in all five boroughs; that is a total of 895,000 individual structures! By looking at this Panorama with your kids, they will be able to discover famous sites, see renowned skyscrapers and look at all the bridges that connect the five boroughs. They will also come to realize how many parks the city has.
If you go on a Sunday, from 1:30 p.m.–4:30 p.m., check out the free Family Drop-in Art Workshops, which are meant to develop art skills through a variety of materials and themes. Children from 5-12 years old are welcome with an adult companion are welcome. The program offers fun and educational activities to fuel conversations about the Panorama and the other art on display.
