Rumors have been swirling for months that Emily Maynard, Brad Womack’s ex-fiancee from last year’s The Bachelor, would be the next Bachelorette. She herself shot down the rumors, multiple times, but the buzz just wouldn’t die. Even though the show doesn’t start filming for two months yet, with a premiere in May, the decision has already been made. Fans of ABC’s The Bachelor 2012 with Ben Flajnik have already been picking favorites. Would it be Kacie Boguskie? Nicki Sterling? Lindzi Cox? Emily O’Brien? Any of these ladies probably would make a great show, and have solid fan support. However, Wednesday morning gossip guru Reality Steve spoilers nail down the name for the next season, and even he is surprised. ABC’s The Bachelorette 2012 is Emily Maynard after all.
In his new blog post, Reality Steve says that the decision has been made and after months of denials and rumors, Emily Maynard is The Bachelorette. Filming begins in March, and Steve says that they are filming in North Carolina where Emily and her daughter Ricki live. The announcement is not likely to be made any time soon by ABC, though with the spoiler out this early that may well change their timetable. This time it’s not like they have to wait for a current bachelorette to be eliminated before they make the announcement. Many wonder just WHY Emily would agree to do this, and there seem to be three main possible reasons.
First, she genuinely wants to find love and feels that the show is an avenue that works. She fell head-over-heels in love with Brad Womack and while that didn’t work, she thinks it can work a second time. Second, the rumors that she really wants a career in television or the public eye is true, and this is a great vehicle for it. She has denied this multiple times, but now that she’s taken on the role it’s sure to pop up again. Third, money. The leads are said to do pretty well, and certainly she could virtually name her price tag as such a franchise favorite. Which reason do you think it is? Can you think of a different reason?
Emily Maynard said during her break-up interview with Chris Harrison that the media scrutiny played a significant factor in the split between her and Brad. Paps hiding in the bushes, “friends” speaking to tabloids, Emily said she didn’t know who to trust and the attention was overwhelming for her young daughter. Given all of that, which seemed sincere at the time, it seems interesting that she would put herself back in the same position – and this time as the lead. Perhaps she thinks the worst has already been said, though many think she is setting herself up for even more intense attention this time. Having said time and again she was not interested in being The Bachelorette, many franchise fans will be interested in seeing what she has to say.
The question also comes up about where she lives. She said that moving to be near Brad Womack was not an issue for her, yet she never moved. While it’s great that the show will film where she is for the sake of her daughter, surely the final guy will be from outside the area. She struggled with balancing motherhood with seeing Brad last time, so what is her plan this time? Typically the ladies are the ones to move when couples last for a while – see Trista Sutter, Ashley Hebert, Ali Fedotowsky, Jillian Harris – though perhaps this season is the one that will break the mold.
Emily Maynard was, for many, America’s Sweetheart for quite some time, so the appeal for ABC is obvious. Will she still drum up the ratings? Will America get behind her quest to find love? What do you think? The Bachelorette returns to ABC in May, airing on channel 15 in Scottsdale.
