My family took a trip for lunch to 88 Buffet in Huntsville, Alabama, Sunday, February 26, 2012 to celebrate the birthdays of two family members. There were 9 of us, including two small children and a baby.
Prices: The prices are comparable to other buffet-style restaurants. They aren’t extraordinary nor are they high for a family. Unrelated to our visit, I’m impressed that 88 Buffet has a complete website, with prices listed upfront. A lot of restaurants won’t do that because they want to compel you to come in to see the prices, knowing you’ll be less likely to leave once you’re in. I like that this Huntsville business is open about their prices.
Atmosphere: When you walk through the doors, you’re immediately surrounded with the soothing sounds of a water fall. The lobby area of the restaurant has brick walls on either side covered with running water. You walk on a wood bridge over a small pond that carries you into the restaurant itself. The entire inside of 88 Buffet is aesthetically pleasing; very nice décor and set-up. However, don’t be fooled by the music you hear on the website. We listened to contemporary music inside the dining room. Not a big deal, but it was something I noticed.
Food Quality: I have to be honest and say that the quantity of food overpowered the quality of the food. The sweet tea I ordered was fantastic but the food itself wasn’t great and most of it wasn’t even at optimal temperatures. But the food wasn’t bad either. It was simply average. If you’ve ever eaten at Number 1 China in Scottsboro, Alabama, then you already know the type of food that is served at 88 Buffet. While 88 Buffet has more food options, the taste, temperature and set-up of the food is similar. My only real complaint was with the sweet and sour sauce; it was much too sweet and I couldn’t eat it.
As far as options for the kids, I wasn’t very happy. They do have some options for children but not a lot if you have young, picky eaters like I do. My kids had some sweet and sour chicken and french fries and ended the meal with gelatin squares.
Overall, 88 Buffet is okay for a random visit if you’re in town but not ideal for special trips.
88 Buffet is located at 6125 University Drive, Huntsville, Alabama inside of the University Place plaza near Burlington Coat Factory.
