The couch dwelling denizen of the city of Toronto, who enjoys spending his downtime surfing through the 200 + channel universe that the cable gods have to offer, occasionally needs something with a little bit of life, something that will electrify, the millions…and the millions of viewers that tune that programming every single week. Producing nearly 30 hours of television content (even more web-based content) every month the fine folks at World Wrestling Entertainment know how to do this all too well, and with the build to their biggest event of the year ‘Wrestlemania’ every minute has to be ‘Must See TV’. Out today as 3 disc DVD and 2 disc Blu-Ray from WWE Home Video and our friends at eOne Home Entertainment is a career retrospective of one of the most exciting superstars in WWE history who is stepping back in the ring at the upcoming Wrestlemania 28. Finally…it’s time for “The Epic Journey of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson”.
Having finally…finally returned to the WWE after a 7 year hiatus; “The Epic Journey of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson” covers his story in its entirety. From his early years growing up in a sports entertainment family and his earliest memories of the business of professional wrestling, to playing Division 1 NCAA Football for the University of Miami to being a third generation WWE superstar that became to most electrifying sports entertainer in the history of the WWE who ended up conquering Hollywood and came back to the squared circle on his own terms.
Part hype machine for the upcoming Wrestlemania 28 event, and part insightful look back; WWE Home Video has put together another well rounded and entertaining look back at the man that we know as ‘The Rock’. Chronicling his life and career ends up as a highly entertaining look back, but unlike some other WWE Home Video releases that go for a very personal and in-depth look at the superstars lives or some problems with drugs, alcohol etc; this nearly 2 hour documentary is meant as a celebration. Not all stories need strife or problems to overcome, as an individual Dwayne Johnson is a pretty inspirational guy, any goal he has set for himself in life he has seemingly achieved, and it is a testament to not only his abilities but his determination and will power are a great example for younger fans of the WWE and while ‘The Rock’ may not always be the most upstanding citizen, Dwayne Johnson is a pretty good person for people to look up to.
In addition to the documentary, this set includes 11 fantastic matches throughout his career versus the likes of Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H, Mankind and many more. As well as these we get 3 exclusive Blu-Ray extras including his challenge to John Cena for Wrestlemania 28, his birthday celebration live on Raw from Miami and the ‘Never Before, Never Again’ tag team match from the Survivor Series 2011 when the Rock & John Cena took on the team of The Awesome Truth.
Ultimately, “The Epic Journey of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson” isn’t necessarily as hard hitting or even as compelling as other WWE produced documentaries have been, but it doesn’t have to be. There’s nothing wrong with celebrating an honest to goodness success story; and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is certainly that.
4 out of 5 stars.
