Do you remember us telling you about the video created by Jon Huntsman supporters? The one that they pretended was made by a Ron Paul supporters? The one that the media demanded Ron Paul apologize for?
Ron Paul’s campaign is suing the makers of the smear video.
Presidential candidate Ron Paul’s campaign committee sued the unidentified makers of a video deriding ex-Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, claiming the online attack against the former Republican rival falsely implies it was made or endorsed by the Texas congressman.
It seems that although we had to find proof that the video was not made by Ron Paul supporters, the campaign team may be able to use other means to successfully sue the creators of this video.
Press coverage of the video has been “scathingly negative” toward Paul because of the assumption that he was behind it, the lawyers said. Huntsman, a former ambassador to China, announced Jan. 16 that he would drop out of the Republican presidential race and endorse former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
“This is a classic case of dirty politics resulting from the unlawful use in commerce of an underhanded and deceptive advertisement designed to tarnish plaintiff’s reputation,” according to the complaint. The identities of the videos creators are unknown, according to the lawsuit.
The complaint for false designation, false advertising and defamation seeks unspecified punitive damages and a court order barring use of Paul’s name and trademarks and requiring the video to be taken down and destroyed.
I guess we’ll see if it really was someone associated with the Huntsman campaign as we believe.
This from the man who inferred every other candidate isn’t civil…
“As candidates for our party’s nomination, our common goal is to restore bold and principled leadership to the White House,” he said. “Yet rather than seeking to advance that common goal by speaking directly to voters about our ideas … this race has degenerated into an onslaught of negative and personal attacks not worthy of the American people.”
“At its core, the Republican Party is a party of ideas. But the current toxic form of our political discourse does not help our cause,” he added. “Today I call on each campaign to cease attacking each other and instead talk directly to the American people.”
Maybe Rachel Maddow won’t be the only one apologizing to Ron Paul…
Keep an eye out for Ron Paul 2012 Presidential Campaign Committee Inc. v. John Does. I know I will.
