The city of Sandusky (located an hour west of Cleveland — Ohio Turnpike Exit 118) is offering visitors a chance to embrace the glories of winter with a multitude of family-friendly, fun and educational activities at their free annual Arctic Ice Festival on Saturday, February 4 and Sunday, February 5 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Arctic Ice Festival Taking place along the Sandusky waterfront at the Maritime Museum, the Sandusky Sailing Club and the Erie County Senior Center, this year’s Arctic Ice Festival is offering activities like ice skating, ice carving and a speaker (Jim Miller) on the subject of “Ice Harvesting on the Sandusky Bay”.
Highlight activities of the Festival include ice boat racing and demonstrations on ice fishing and ice harvesting. Special Historical Note: Known for its history of ice harvesting, the city of Sandusky would harvest and store natural ice with crews working 11-14 hour days, 7 days a week to fill icehouses. A modern ice harvesting demonstration will take place on Sunday, February 5 at noon.
The ice fishing demonstrations and ice boat races will take place from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 4 at the Sandusky Sailing Club. An ice carving demonstration will occur at the Sandusky Sailing Club on Sunday at noon and visitors can participate in an amateur ice carving competition from 11 a.m,. – 2 p.m.
Visitors will also be able to tour the Maritime Museum for only a $1 admission. Also at the Maritime Museum on both Saturday and Sunday will be craft activities supplied by the Erie Metroparks from noon – 4 p.m.
The Erie County Senior Center will have a Soup Cook-Off on Saturday, February 4 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Admission is $3 and you will be able to sample all the soups in the competition.
The Senior Center will also play host to an Arts & Crafts Show on Sunday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Visitors who are history buffs can also enjoy an Underground Railroad Trolley Tour departing from the Maritime Museum on Saturday at 11 a.m. which will visit several Underground Railroad historic sites. Cost of the tour is $5.
