So much passion, talent, and commitment goes into making the annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival 2012 the great success that it is. Everyone who attends, from actors, writers, editors, filmmakers, to film students, gain new appreciation, awareness, and enjoyment of films, ranging from shorts to documentaries to full features. The beautiful, historic Arlington Theatre appropriately served as the venue for the opening night premiere of Lawrence Kasdan’s “Darling Companion,” a true ‘cinematographic extravaganza.’
Kasdan, whose immense body of work, has enriched movie-goers’ lives– from The Big Chill, to Grand Canyon, to Body Heat, delivers once again, in Darling Companion, featuring an illustrious cast including Kevin Kline, Diane Keaton, Elisabeth Moss, Dianne Wiest, and introducing Ayelet Zurer. An endearing dog enters the lives and hearts of a married couple, ‘out of alignment,’ which causes them to re-explore their relationship and the finer things in life, beyond work and stress- all in the midst of a beautiful cinematographic backdrop of the Rocky Mountains, Colorado. Lawrence and Meg Kasdan were drawn to bringing this original story to screen after a real life encounter/rescue with an abandoned dog. Although not completely autobiographical, it does touch on important, sensitive themes like marriage, intimacy and connection – how to enjoy life ‘in the moment,’ all in a positive, light, ‘Zen,’ spiritual manner, rather than a heavy, melodramatic plot.
The Santa Barbara International Film Fest, now in its 27th year, has a stellar line-up of galas and award presentations, honoring Viola Davis; Martin Scorsese, Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo of ‘The Artist,’ Christopher Plummer, and The VIrtuoso Awards, honoring actors and actresses, wise and talented ‘beyond their years,’ Rooney Mara; Shailene Woodley; Melissa McCarthy; Andy Serkis; Patton Oswald; and Demian Bichir.
Various genres , sure to please every palate, are represented, ranging from comedy to drama; animation to supernatural to horror. For movie buffs throughout the world, the SBIFF is just the ticket: to the movies and over the moon!
