Rick Santorum’s political action committee (PAC) Freedom’s Defense Fund, used robocalls to call on Democrats to vote for Rick Santorum in today’s open primary in Michigan. While democrats can vote for President Obama, the Michigan Democratic Party will be holding a caucus in May to pick their delegates, so it does not make a difference if they vote for a republican today, and they do not have to change parties to do it..
The Obama campaign is asking for democrats to just stay home in Michigan and not vote in the open primary. But many democrats are expected to vote, and they will vote against Mitt Romney who was born in Michigan. The reason they’re voting for anyone but Mitt, is because of his stand against the auto industry bailouts and the jobs that would have been lost.
Here is the transcript of the robocall:
Attention all Democrats: Gov. Rick Snyder just endorsed Mitt Romney, the same Mitt Romney who said [Romney: ‘let Detroit go bankrupt.’] Mitt Romney doesn’t care about Michigan. This Tuesday is our chance to send Romney and Gov. Snyder a message. So please, go vote on Tuesday for Rick Santorum in the Republican primary. Now voting for Rick Santorum on Tuesday does not mean you’re becoming a Republican. You’ll still be able to vote in the Michigan Democratic Party caucuses and to reelect President Obama in November. This is our chance to send a message to Gov. Rick Snyder and his buddy Mitt Romney, who wants to [Romney: ‘let Detroit go bankrupt.’] Remember: a vote for Rick Santorum is a vote to embarrass Gov. Rick Snyder and Mitt Romney. Vote Santorum on Tuesday.
This is not a new idea, it was used against President Obama in 2008 when he was running against Hillary Clinton. Back then, Rush Limbaugh asked voters in open primary states to vote for Clinton, Limbaugh called it “Operation Chaos”.
Current polling has the primary in Michigan about tied; Real Clear Politics which uses several polls and then averages them out, shows Mitt Romney at 37.3 percent, Rick Santorum 35.8 percent, Ron Paul 12.5 percent and Newt Gingrich at 10.3 percent.
And because of a rules change by the Republican National Committee (RNC), any state that holds a primary or caucus before April 1, they must award their delegates on a proportional basis, rather than the winner-take-all method, which is good for anyone not named Mitt Romney.
