“The X Factor” executive producer Simon Cowell dumped his ex-fiancée Mezhgan Hussainy because he thought she was too clingy, according to Cowell’s longtime friend Zeta Graff, who gave a tabloid interview detailing what allegedly caused the breakup.
Cowell and Hussainy got engaged in early 2010, but by the end of 2011, there were reports that they had split up, since Cowell was seen spending his December holidays in the Caribbean without Hussainy and in the company of other women, whom he later said were just friends of his.
Graff, a millionaire divorceé, was one of those women spending time with Cowell in the Caribbean. And although some tabloids reported that Graff and Cowell were dating (and there were paparazzi photos of them acting affectionately to each other on a yacht), Cowell and Graff have denied in interviews that they are in a romantic relationship. During his Caribbean vacation, Cowell was also seen hanging out with his ex-girlfriends Jackie St. Clair and Sinitta.
Cowell has not gone public about why he and Hussainy ended their engagement. A wedding date was never set. In January 2012 (the most recent time he has talked to the media about Hussainy), he gave a few tabloid interviews describing his relationship with Hussainy as being in limbo, but he did admit that he could not see himself getting married. Cowell, 52, has never been married, and he has said in many interviews that he does not want children because he works too much to be a good parent.
The Daily Mirror’s 3 am gossip column interviewed Graff at the 20th Annual Elton John Aids Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party in West Hollywood, California, on February 26, 2012. This what Graff said about her Caribbean vacation with Cowell and why Cowell’s romantic relationship with Hussainy fell apart:
“Mezhgan was lovely but it was all too much for Simon. As soon as he hears the words ‘stability’ and ‘future’, I think it all became a bit too much. She was too needy, but he did try. Simon needs a woman who isn’t defined by him, who has her own career or wealth. Someone who doesn’t depend on him. But he and Mezhgan are still friends.
“It was an amazing holiday, we had so much fun. There was a photo taken of us in which my hair was falling over his face. It looked like we were kissing when we weren’t. Simon found it hilarious the next day when everyone was saying I was his new girlfriend. But when I told him I’d kiss Sinitta so people would say that I was her girlfriend, he told me not to.
“Simon is single and gets offers from women everywhere he goes – but he doesn’t act on it. He might flirt with me but that’s Simon. We’re definitely just friends. There is no one serious in his life at the moment.”
On February 21, 2012, Cowell did a Q&A at a Shooting Star Chase charity event in London. When he was asked if he will ever get married, Cowell gave what must have been a tongue-in-cheek answer:
“The truth is no-one will marry me. I must have made 65 marriage proposals and no one’s said yes so it’s probably not going to happen.”
Obviously, it isn’t true that Cowell was rejected every time he proposed marriage because Hussainy said yes to his marriage proposal. The part that is easy to believe is that Cowell will remain unmarried for the rest of his life because he has been very open in telling people that his lifestyle and personality are not compatible with marriage.
Before Cowell and Hussainy became a couple, he dated “Extra” correspondent Terri Seymour from 2002 to 2008. They reportedly broke up because she wanted to get married and have kids, and he did not.
