For waterfall lovers who don’t want to deal with long or difficult hikes that are normally associated with good waterfalls, then US 64 between Highlands, NC and Franklin, NC is the place for you. Six memorable waterfalls are available roadside as the Cullasaja River flows through the Cullasaja Gorge, dropping 1400 feet before flattening out in the valley below.
Start at the intersection of US 64 and NC 106 in Highlands and head west. Keep your eyes open.
1.8 miles – Lake Sequoyah Dam. Not really a waterfall but worth a visit.
1.8 miles – Kalakaleskies Falls. Same parking area as for the dam.
2.3 miles – Bridal Veil Falls. Impossible to miss.
3.1 miles – Dry Falls. Park Service recreational area.
6.4 miles – Quarry Falls. Look for a kiosk at the far end of the parking area.
8.7 miles – Cullasaja Falls. Biggest waterfall, smallest parking area.
It is doubtful there are this many impressive waterfalls so accessible in such a short distance anywhere in country.
