Last night from Hollywood, California the 84th Annual Academy Awards made it’s debut on network television station ABC and hit high marks with social media as the event generated 3.8 million comments on Twitter, Facebook and other social media websites during the telecast.
The Oscars drew in 39 million viewers to the live event – an increase of 1.4 million people compared to last year’s show – according to Nielsen’s estimates.
It seems that whenever social media is involved, unexpected results happen but in a good way as the Oscars received the second most number of social media comments behind this year’s telecast of the Grammy Awards which had 13 million social media comments. Last year’s third most popular awards event the MTV Video Music Awards had 3.1 million comments, according to Bluefin Labs.
Compared to last year’s social event that had 1 million comments, the number of comments during Sunday’s ceremony increased by almost 300%.
These figures show that social media is effective and can increase a company’s traffic and revenue with individuals on sites like Twitter and Facebook as more people continue to use them from their electronic devices such as a laptop computer, smartphone or tablet.
Of course advertisers must be doing cartwheels as they were hoping to (and now did) cash in on the Academy’s social media strategy since each 30–second commercial costs $1.7 million to air during last night’s Oscars.
Social media has a huge influence on people’s lives today than ever before as Facebook now has 845 million users worldwide using the site along with estimates that Twitter is edging close to hit almost 500 million users sometime this year.
Although some people may be reluctant to get a social media account and use it for either personal or business purposes, the reality is that the technology is here to stay and is powerful tools in determining the growth of a business.
Several local LA businesses have a social media presence and it’s paying off for them.
Newcomer to the daily deals website business, YourBestDeals.com has only been using social media for less than one year and it’s Facebook fan page has over 30,000 fans while their Twitter followers are up to almost 30,000 – those are impressive numbers since the company didn’t even have an account with either social media site when their business first launched.
Social media can also be credited to today’s shooting earlier at Chardon High School in a suburb located just outside of Cleveland, Ohio as many students got online to post messages that they were okay and what the horrific experience was like as it unfolded.
The figures for the number of comments during the Oscars is proof that social media can have a positive effect in business, but if you’re still not convinced, it might be time to read an encouraging story about a LA unemployed writer earns $40,000 from one tweet.
Whether you love or hate social media the technology is now becoming a permanent fixture in our lives and is here to stay.
