Normally there would be no way that we would be thinking about swimming on February 1 in the Laurel Highlands. However, with a warm winter and little snow we may find ourselves thinking about summer not being far away. And this year Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA) will take advantage of this.
They are bringing their popular Polar Plunge to the Laurel Highlands this year for the first time. The Laurel Highlands Polar Plunge will take place beginning at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Quemahoning Reservoir. The Polar Plunge will have a Mardi Gras theme and will is scheduled to coincide with the beginning of the 2012 Special Olympics Winter Games in the Johnstown area on Sunday, February 12, 2012.
The SOPA Polar Plunges are an important fundraising event for Special Olympics. Polar plunges across the country have raised millions of dollars for Special Olympics. Last year’s “40 for 40” Polar Plunge ended up raising $12,000 for Special Olympics Pennsylvania. This resulted in this year’s full plunge fund raiser in the Laurel Highlands.
There are other activities besides the Plunge itself. Join WJAC Chief Meteorologist and SOPA Board Member Jim Burton as he serves as Master of Ceremonies and takes the plunge himself. Stop by Plunge Towne and have some fun before the Plunge. There will be refreshments and activities in the morning in Plunge Towne along with a Mardi Gras costume contest. In addition, there will be live music provided by Johnstown’s Sam Coco.
There are two ways to enjoy the day.
Come on out and take the plunge. Plungers are asked to pledge a minimum of $50 to take the plunge. You can form a ten person team at $50 per person for more fun. Plungers who raise the $50 minimum pledge will receive a 2012 Polar Plunge long-sleeved T-shirt. Those that have pledges above that could be eligible for more prizes. Go to the Special Olympics website to register and set up a pledge page.
If you are not into jumping into the cold reservoir, you can still sponsor a plunger. Those pledging at least $50 to a plunger will receive a long-sleeve “Too Chicken to Plunge” T-shirt. You will also be able to enjoy the Plunge Towne events in the morning. You can also visit the Special Olympics website to sponsor a plunger.
