St. Thomas offers a tropical treat during the cold winter months. Located in the U.S. Virgin Islands just east of Puerto Rico, it is a about a 3 1/2 hour flight from Miami and under 4 hours from Atlanta. It is also available by cruise ship.
St. Thomas offers beautiful waters, miles of white sandy beaches, scenic views from atop its mountains, and Caribbean dining experiences. There is a ferry to nearby St. John’s National Park. Both islands have great sailing, boat rental, scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing and ecotours.
On St. Thomas, vacationers can visit the Coral World Marine Park and Undersea Laboratory, take the skyride to Paradise Point, and tour historical Charlotte Amalie. Then, there is Magan’s Bay, rated as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches by Conde Nast and National Geographic. It is a perfect place to relax and sunbathe.
Charlotte Amalie has several interesting historical sites to include Blackbeard’s Castle, Bluebeard’s Castle and the 99 steps. There are many interesting restaurants such as the Greenhouse Restaurant.
St Thomas has several excellent hotels. The Marriott Frenchman’s Reef is right on the Caribbean and has lovely pools and a private beach. It offers an inexpensive and relaxing water taxi to Charlotte Amalie. The hotel has several restaurants and observation decks to watch the sunset. As with many places on the islands, there are lots of iguanas wandering around.
Though St. Thomas can be pricey, there are ways to make a dollar stretch. Charlotte Amalie has chain restaurants to include Pizza Hut, KFC, Wendy’s and Subway. Even getting there and staying at a fabulous hotel can be reasonable if you use a travel service such as www.cheapcaribbean.com.
The U.S. Virgin Islands are an organized, unincorporated territory of the United States. A passport is not required to visit the islands, but proof of citizenship, such as government issued photo ID, is required to leave the island. The water in the main towns and hotels is safe to drink.
They drive on the left side of the road, though most of the cars are for American consumers and have steering wheels on the left side of the car. If you rent a vehicle, it may seem odd to drive on the other side. What is most important, though, is to look for the road signs (speed limit and especially stop signs) on the left shoulder.
St. Thomas is a wonderful romantic getaway. Take your sweetie, your bathing suits, sunscreen, tropical clothing and leave the stress back home.
