Why miss this dramatic presentation? You still have a couple of times to witness this historic journey into this classical theatrical drama at the Stage Aurora. The live production of “To Kill A Mockingbird” has impact, suspense, personalization and a little bit of comedy to entertain and inform. The Big Read grant from the NEA did not miss its mark when it awarded the funds to Mr. Darryl Reuben Hall to put on this and other Black History month projects for the city of Jacksonville Florida.
The actors (see a list of participants here) were subperve. This was the second time that this writer has seen this show at the Stage Aurora and no disrespect to the previous cast; this company belted out more professionalism as they fine-tuned their gifts in the acting field. They approached the stage through the audience from all directions and it gave an ambiance that you were part of the play.
William Green, who portrayed Atticus, did as good of a job (or better) than actor Gregory Peck did in the movie version of “To Kill A Mockingbird” especially with his final court summarization. Ramona Roberts starring in the guise of Calpurnia, would remind you of a relative that you may have had in your family that would make sure you did what was right and she was a great care-giver (correlating to the sassiness depicted in “The Help”). Then there’s Britney Barber;this young actress poured out her soul in her characterization of Mayella Ewell. You will be mesmerized by her part and also astounded. Line memorization was on key; even with all the younger artists.
The set designs are very well constructed and memorable of that era and location. There were two parts in the drama where the actors speedily moved the props and rearranged the set for the next scene. This was done with the upmost timing. All-in-all, the performances should be “packed” every night next week. Don’t miss your chance to see this presentation.
