February will finish off on a very fitting note for this winter. Highs will soar past 60 degrees on Wednesday. That’s how our extra day of winter will be for 2012. (It’s Feb 29th.) Meteorologists have a slightly different seasonal calendar then astronomers. So, meteorological spring actually starts on Thursday! It’s definitely going to be feeling like spring for just about the entire week. There is a cool down on the way for the weekend however.
Expect more sunshine to start your Tuesday but not to finish it. Clouds will increase out ahead of the first of two strong weather systems this week by late afternoon. We’ll stay dry the entire day though. Heavy rain will move in Tuesday night as a warm front lifts north through central Ohio. Some rumbles of thunder will also be possible. Depending on how much sunshine peaks out late Wednesday morning and the exact timing of the cold front, there is a risk for severe thunderstorms on Wednesday afternoon. Unlike last week, favorable deep moisture will actually make it all the way up past I-70 providing the needed juice for strong storms. The other key ingredient is warmth getting to the surface from the sun, and that is the biggest question mark right now. A full forecast video will be posted tomorrow afternoon with another update on severe weather. Stay tuned to modenook.com on Wednesday also for the latest updates. Highs will reach at least the middle 60’s on Wednesday! So be sure to get out and enjoy it between showers.
Thursday will be our “day off” from storms before another low pressure area swings through on Friday. We’ll see cooler weather with highs near 50 Thursday under afternoon sunshine. The system on Friday is also looking ominous in terms of strength and ingredients for severe weather somewhere in the Ohio Valley. The main thing to focus on for that storm is the timing of the front here in Columbus. Right now models have the system moving through during the late evening hours which would be past the peak time to see severe weather. If the cold front moves in earlier, severe weather will be a threat again on Friday. As always, modenook.com will have the latest forecast updates on rain and severe weather throughout the week.
