When this line was made popular in the movie Forest Gump, it was not new to many. It was a memory from childhood here in Springfield, MO and even the Christian kids said it to each other. Sticking with the idea that we all do stupid things from time to time the City Council is working to correct one of their errors.
As a Christianity Examiner these articles are based on a Christian world view. Christians want their communities to be safe and free from damaging influences for children and adults. Passing an ordinance that would strengthen the laws against public nudity seemed like a good idea at the time. It was not. It was a knee jerk response to what seemed to be an unwise demonstration by the Free the Nipple campaign.
They came to this fair city and demonstrated on the square. No one was arrested. Not even the bare chested females. Many spectators came to watch the display. When this was tastefully shown on television many people were upset with the fact that the reason Springfield Police did not arrest anyone was because they were not violating any statutes that were in force on the books. This had to be corrected.
Enter Springfield City Council. An ordinance is proposed and discussed and passed against the wishes of some of council and all the proponents of Free the Nipple. An earlier article pointed out the absurdity of the rallies that were held here. They seemed to have back fired. Enter the ACLU from stage left. Springfield is presented with a law suit alleging discrimination. The ACLU attorney says that the suit will be dropped, if the ordinance is repealed and his legal fees are paid.
Maybe the Free the Nipple movement and the ACLU lawyer knew all the time what they wanted. They did not wish for Springfield women to be able to parade around bare chested. They had that right. Money was needed either for the cause or for certain individual’s pockets. Council stepped in that one.
Monday the process started to repeal the new law. Even the councilman who started this mess is back-peddling. It has not been revealed yet that the city will pay the legal fees as has been requested. Who knows if this will even be reported, when it is finished. Remember who voted yes on the ordinance and who voted no the first time, if you believe that your officials should be smart enough to keep your money out of the hands of unscrupulous people.
