Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace– While not a new release, George Lucas has decided to parade his epic space saga into theaters through 3-D format. Starting from the beginning with the 1999 Phantom Menace film, all 6 Star Wars feature will be released in order. The Phantom Menace begins the story of Darth Vader, meeting him as a young boy on Tatooine. Ewan McGregor stars as a young Obi-Wan Kenobi, Natalie Portman as Queen Amidala (future mother of twins Luke and Leia), and Jake Llyod as the future Darth Vader: Anakin Skywalker. Look for its arrival in early 2012.
Starting off the summer movie season with a bang is star-studded cast of The Avengers. Robert Downey Jr. is Iron Man, Samuel L. Jackson is Nick Fury, Mark Ruffalo is the Hulk, and Chris Evans is Captain America. With this parade of superheroes, this film is sure to be a big hit. The story centers on Nick Fury and the international agency S.H.I.E.L.D who bring together a team of super humans to form the Avengers. The group arrives in theaters on May 4th.
What’s the summer season without a Johnny Depp/ Tim Burton Collaboration? Based on the favorite TV series, Dark Shadows is the latest from the duo. Co-starring Helena Bonham Carter and Michelle Pfeiffer, Dark Shadows is a gothic tale centering on the life of Barnabas Collins, a vampire, and his various run ins with other gothic creatures such as witches, werewolves, and ghosts. Dark Shadows comes haunting into theaters on May 11.
Next up is Battleship, yes that’s right Battleship. Proving that any board game can be made into a blockbuster film, Hollywood will parade this story based on the popular game into theaters this summer. So what exactly could the plot be? Well, according to imdb.com, it is about a fleet of ships that is forced to do battle with an armada of unknown origins in order to discover and thwart their destructive goals. Sails into theaters on May18.
Will Smith has not been seen in any movies recently so it’s only fitting he returns in a big way with Men in Black III. This sequel finds Agent J (Smith) travelling back in time to MIB’s early years in the 1960s to stop an assassination attempt on his friend Agent K. MIB III travels into theaters on May 25.
Rock of Agesis next up in the parade of big stars. With Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, and Russell Brand to name a few, the movie version of the Broadway smash follows couple Drew and Sherrie in 1987 Los Angeles. Both are chasing their dreams in the big city and when they meet, its love at first sight but they will face some challenges. Tom Cruise makes his singing debut on June 1.
