Commentary from the liberterrain…
The Big News shaking and quaking all the Big Media status quo mavens over the past couple of weeks in MetroplexLand was the Big Drug Bust on the campus of Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.
The reason the Dallas Libertarian Examiner has been so slow to comment on the big “scandal” is because there really isn’t much for a libertarian to write an article about other than to say the almost boringly obvious: “In a libertarian society there is no such thing as a victimless crime.”
Throughout the whole reporting frenzy North Texans, and the country, have been told that at least 17 students, including four members of the Horned Frogs football team, were arrested after a six-month-long drug sting in which students sold marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy and prescription drugs to undercover cops who should have been fully engaged in fighting actual crimes that resulted in actual violence against actual people.
The media never identified any individual as being the victim of any crime. There were no reports of anyone being forced against their will or intimidated or defrauded into buying or selling or using anything. Because there were no such victims.
The students didn’t perform any real-world criminal activity; they simply broke some public authoritarians’ rules imposed on them without their consent and without reference to any notion of simple common sense.
For that they get arrested, handcuffed, dragged to a jail for paperwork processing, dragged through a courtroom, have their own or parent’s bank accounts ripped open to pay for lawyers, hassled, harassed, harangued, and otherwise have their lives dumped on.
In today’s irrational society the rulers could just as easily criminalize possession of toothpicks or bubblegum or thumbtacks or SpongeBob Pez dispensers with the same negative results for the same phony, pointless reason: the sociopathic desire to dominate others.
Of course, in a libertarian society, in which an educational institution such as TCU, being a wholly private, non-governmental entity, could make it against their rules for any student to use, buy or sell anything, and the student could either terminate the contract or not sign it in the first place, and go elsewhere for an education.
There would be no crime by the student or by TCU. Only government could commit such a crime.
This incident is just another example of the enormously senseless waste of human time, effort, and expense.
