Today the American Kennel Club (AKC) announced their list of the most popular dog breeds in the United States for 2011. While the top two spots have not changed since 2010, a new breed has broken into the top three.
For 21 years running, the beloved Labrador Retriever (Lab) has topped the list of America’s favorite dog breeds. This family favorite is known for its playfulness, loyalty and versatility. Labs have a reputation as wonderful companions as well as good working dogs.
Along with the Lab, the German Shepherd Dog enjoys a spot near the top of the list for 2011. In a repeat performance of its standing in 2010, the German Shepherd Dog holds steady at number two.
The surprise player this year is the Beagle, which has overtaken the Yorkshire Terrier to claim the number three ranking on the list. “While the Labrador Retriever has proven once again to be a family favorite, this year clearly belongs to the Beagle,” says AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson. “The Beagle’s merry personality combined with his love of outdoor activities make him such a wonderful family pet that I wouldn’t be surprised to see this spunky breed sniff his way to the top of the list next year.”
The full list of top ten breeds in the U.S. for 2011 as reported by AKC is:

- Golden Retriever
- Yorkshire Terrier
Other notable trends in the list of top dog breeds of 2011 include a skewing towards larger breeds, with Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherd Dogs, Golden Retrievers, Boxers and Rottweilers making appearances in the top ten. Other large breeds, including Bernese Mountain Dogs, Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs, Bullmastiffs, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Irish Wolfhounds and Belgian Malinois, are also increasing in popularity. Coonhounds fell the farthest in popularity in 2011, from 91st to 109th on the list. Terriers are making a comeback though, with Bedlington Terriers, Border Terriers and Dandie Dinmont Terriers all rising in popularity.
