Twilight paved the way to what seems to be not just a growth in fan popularity but also an increased Hollywood interest in young adult literature book to film franchises. This year alone will be a big year for the genre with the debut of the final Twilight film, the first Hunger Games movie and the production of the first Mortal Instruments film.
And as the movies get closer, the fans need for any information is contagious. “Fan frenzy over The Hunger Games is escalating rapidly the closer we get to March 23rd. Hunger Games fans are clearly ready to see this story hit the big screen, and it’s obvious in every tweet, comment, and Tumblr post I see from the fandom. Every new tidbit of news is greeted with excitement and enthusiasm. At this point, I just hope the movie lives up to their expectations … I’m not sure fans will be able to handle any sort of disappointment,” says Sara Gundell, The Hunger Games Examiner and founder of Novel Novice.
This week has sparked a new frenzied desire for news for The Mortal Instruments fans. Cassandra Clare’s Internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series has an active online community much thanks to her active online interactions with her fans. No movie news for City of Bones, the first film in the franchise since the casting of Jamie Campbell Bower as Jace. But this week Lily Collins, who will play City of Bones heroine Clary, dropped out of her attachment to ‘The Evil Dead’ remake due to a scheduling conflict. The only unfinished project on her schedule is City of Bones.
Then yesterday ‘City of Bones’ screenwriter, I. Marlene King teased fans with “exciting news.” This morning she tweeted that news will be “coming soon.”
We can’t forget Twilight that really seemed to launch this latest Hollywood craze of adapting YA novels for screen. Examiner Amanda Bell is The Twilight Examiner and The Divergent Examiner. Divergent by Veronica Roth is another YA novel up for the big screen treatment and Divergent fans are also hungry for any news. “I know we have a while to wait for the Divergent film adaptation, but it’s still exciting nonetheless. Twilight really paved the way for female-centric YA book-to-film franchises, and Divergent fits right in there with The Hunger Games and The Mortal Instruments as one of those series with the potential to be a big deal trilogy of books and films. We wait with bated breath for what’s to come,” says Bell.
And these are not the only YA series that we may see in the future. RT Book Reviews recently published an article discussing several YA series’ be adapted. In addition to The Hunger Games, The Mortal Instruments and Divergent the following titles were discussed:
Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
Miss Pergrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
Matched by Allie Condie
Here Lies Bridget by Paige Harbison
Delirium by Lauren Oliver
Though they were not mentioned in the RT article, The Infernal Devices, Cassandra Clare’s other series is up for adaptation as well as Sophie Jordan’s Firelight and Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. I’m sure that there are more that I’m just missing. What’s certain is that young adult literature fans have many reasons to be excited and should lend fandom support to all of the titles. With every successful adaptation such as Twilight, Hollywood will be open to adapting more titles. If you have a favorite that wasn’t mentioned, there is always hope for this exciting future.
